This unamused and sleepy-looking animal from South America is so relatable

Just about everyone can agree that 2020 was an exceptionally tough year. While some things are improving, most people are drained, confused, and even disappointed. Well, someone recently posted on social media about a unique creature with a look that represents how most of us feel.

If you’ve never heard of the Viscacha, you’re not alone. Hailing from South American, it has an appearance you could call a cross between a chinchilla and a rabbit. Oh, and a face that once you’ve seen, you’ll never forget.

When looking at the Viscacha, it’s as though it’s looking back at you and thinking, “Yeah, I know, it’s been a rough year and I sympathize.” After posting information and adorable photos of this creature, the story went viral. Already, it’s garnered more than 300,000 likes on Twitter.

Why so captivating?

There are several reasons why people around the world want to know more about the Viscacha. For one thing, it’s super cute with a mouth that droops at the corners, sleepy eyes, and a rounded belly. But there’s also the fact that most people have never heard of it.

But the biggest reason this critter has drawn so much attention is that its expression embodies how millions of people feel after going through a tumultuous year. Although super cute, you can’t help but notice how miserable it appears. Just an FYI … this animal is actually quite content.

What is a Viscacha?

Found in various parts of South America, including Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina, this creature is a rodent. Its natural habitat consists of rocky areas with plenty of crags. There, it’s typically found living within a small group.

The life of a Viscacha

Like many other rodents, the Viscacha spends most of the daylight hours in hiding. Once the sun goes down, it comes out to forage for food. On rare occasions, people in South America get to see one of these creatures sprawled out on a rock while soaking up the sun’s rays.

So relatable

The Viscacha’s facial expressions coupled with its lifestyle make it relatable to a lot of people. So much so, that some individuals have started referring to this critter as their “spirit animal.” In some strange way, it reassures some people, making them realize they’re not the only ones who’ve been on an emotional roller coaster.

That pretty much sums it up …

… this photo, that is. As one individual stated, the look on this Viscacha’s face depicts how he feels 99 percent of the time. And if you look closely, you’ll notice something funny. This little creature has its paw up as if to say “Talk to the hand.”

Snubbing the world

This Viscacha looks as though it’s snubbing its nose at the world. And again, a lot of people get it. That’s why this unique South American creature has become everyone’s favorite.

This pathetic-looking critter is now so popular that people have started drawing and painting their interpretation of it. Some of them are amazingly good. No matter your take on the matter, you have to admit that it’s nice knowing that something else besides you didn’t appreciate 2020.
