Doctors and nurses are risking their lives on the front line – but so are these unsung hospital heroes

The coronavirus crisis is affecting us all, leading to dramatic numbers of hospital admissions and, tragically, thousands of deaths all over the world.

While most of us are cooped up indoors, waiting for the crisis to pass and hoping to stay safe, there are still plenty of incredible people who are having to go into work each day to provide for people in need.

And no, we’re not just talking about doctors and nurses.

We’ve all seen and heard plenty of stories about what doctors and nurses are going through each day and how far they’re having to go in order to treat patients during this terrible pandemic, working long hours, putting themselves at risk, and doing all they can to save as many people as possible.

They’re rightly being praised for their actions and they absolutely deserve it, but let’s not forget that there are lots of other people working in hospitals too.

We’re talking about the janitors, the housekeepers, the custodians, and everyone else who is still getting out of bed each morning, leaving the safety of their home, and heading into work.

They may not be monitoring patients or providing life-saving treatment, but they’re working hard to keep medical facilities clean and safe places for everyone.

A wonderful Facebook post by a man named JJ Westgate has reminded us all of the important role these people play in keeping hospitals and clinics up and running.

Here’s what JJ wrote in the post:

JJ makes a very important point. Without all those ‘background workers’ doing such important jobs, hospitals simply wouldn’t be able to keep going and doctors wouldn’t be able to provide life-saving care.

These people spend hours each day cleaning up hospital beds, sweeping the floors, mopping the facilities, disposing of waste, and much more. Their work often goes unnoticed or overlooked, but it’s absolutely vital.

Then, there are all of the secretaries, receptionists, maintenance workers, and other individuals who do so much to keep medical facilities running smoothly.

They may not be in the spotlight in the same way as doctors and nurses, and they certainly don’t get the same sort of salaries, but the work they do is incredibly valuable. And at this time, more than ever before, they deserve to know how valued and appreciated they are.

So let’s hear it for all the unsung hospital heroes out there, and while we’re at it, let’s say a big thank you to all the other workers out there in places like grocery stores who are still having to get out into work each day to provide important services for all of us.

Let’s thank them now, and when this is all over, let’s not forget the wonderful work they did.

Please SHARE this with your friends and family.
