Person abandons puppy in middle of the road – and UPS driver immediately pulls over to help
With only 1 out of every 10 dogs finding a home, according to Do Something.org., animal abandonment only adds to the glaring stray dog problem present in America. Fortunately, animal shelters and rescues across the country work tirelessly to help strays in the street. In fact, this is why one dog had an unexpected ally when he found himself abandoned on the side of the road.
A UPS driver witnesses a puppy being abandoned
While out making his deliveries as a UPS driver, Jason Harcrow saw something startling. A car had stopped in the middle of the street. Before he knew it, the occupants of the car had put a tiny puppy out in the road and drove off. Thinking quickly, Harcrow pulled his truck over and attempted to scoop the puppy up. Sadly, he was unable to get the vehicleās license plate number.
The rescue was a little touch-and-go
The puppy, confused and scared, ran back onto the roadway as Harcrow stopped his vehicle nearby. When he pursued the pup in an attempt to get him to safety, the dog then ran underneath his truck. Crouching down, Harcrow tried to coax him out.
āIt was just a busy road so I wanted to make sure it didnāt go out there again,ā Harcrow told KCRA News. āIt was just being a puppy.ā
Harcrow was finally able to get ahold of the puppy
Finally, crawling underneath the truck, Harcrow was able to get ahold of the puppy. When the dog tried to run away again, Harcrow was able to grab him. The driver ended up taking the puppy to the Hughson Police Station located in Modesto, California. Officers with the department then transported the puppy to the Stanislaus County Animal Shelter, where he was named Biscuit by shelter staff.
The puppy is given a clean bill of health
The puppy was checked out by the shelter veterinarian. He turned out to be completely healthy and had suffered no injuries from this horrible event. The police department posted about the incident on its Facebook page, where it quickly gained media attention. This was great because the shelter hoped to get the puppy adopted right away.
Biscuit gets adopted
The shelter put Biscuit up for adoption the day after he arrived at the shelter, receiving many applications from people wanting to adopt him. Harcrow had even considered adopting the puppy himself, but he already had a dog at home and didnāt think he could adequately care for another.
Ultimately, shelter staff was able to select the perfect home for Biscuit, who was renamed Ernie by his new owner. On that fateful day, everyone said their goodbyes to Ernie as he headed off to his forever home.
Harcrow is now being hailed as a hero for his quick actions. For more on the Stanislaus County Animal Agency, visit the organizationās Facebook page.
