Pitbull whose owner passes away is nearly sent to the shelter until UPS driver steps in
How many times a day do you think delivery workers are barked at? It has to be an astronomical number. Despite often being barked at, there have to be some instances where they make furry friends!
In 2016, one UPS driver made a friend at a condo complex in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

The UPS driver, Katie Newhouser, had no idea that her little friends would develop into something that would warm the hearts of millions! Katie was delivering to a condo complex in the area when she met a pit bull named Leo.
Every time she went to the condo, she got to say hello to Leo!
Soon, the two developed a silly little friendship.
“Whenever I’d turn up at the complex, he’d apparently go crazy, and he’d want to come down and see me,” Newhouser told The Dodo. “He just took a liking to me for some reason. He’d always come up and lick me.”
When it was time to go, Leo was always super sad that his friend had to leave.

It got so bad that Leo even tried to hop in the truck a few times as she left! Their little hangouts had developed to such a point that the two were fast friends who always looked out for when the other was around.
The pup’s mom, Tina, even got to know Katie from the doggy-friendship.
Katie has ended up meeting a ton of customers from her work, especially if they have a dog!
“I saw Tina walking Leo and stopped to pet him,” Newhouser said. “That’s how I started talking to Tina. That’s actually how I’ve started talking to most of my customers. If they’ve got a dog, I’m stopping.”
Later on that year, however, things would change.

Katie went on a vacation and wasn’t delivering for a few days. When she got back, things had changed.
“I was on vacation, and when I came back to work, I went to the complex,” Newhouser said. “When I was pulling in, I saw [Tina’s] son Cannon pulling out with furniture in the back, and I thought, ‘Oh that’s weird.’ I just waved to him and he waved to me. And I didn’t think anything of it, because she was looking to move because the association of the condo was giving Leo a hard time because he was a pit bull, and they didn’t really want him there.”
They weren’t moving the furniture for fun – Tina had passed away.
When Katie called Tina, she learned the news. Tina had passed, and there was no word of what would happen to Leo. Looking on Tina’s Facebook page, she got the scoop.
Cannon, Tina’s son, was heading into the military and needed to get rid of Leo.

When Katie heard that her old friend might end up in a shelter, she had to act.
“I said [to Cannon], ‘I’ll take Leo until you can come back and get him from your training,’” she told The Dodo. “And he said, ‘That’s fine.’ And then I picked him up that following Saturday.”
The two friends were reunited again!
After an adjustment period, Leo took to his new family.
Even though Katie already had other dogs, she knew she couldn’t let her friend get sent to a shelter. Once he got used to the new home (and stopped crying for his lost mom), he was as happy as could be.
