Veteran nervously awaits reunion with military partner in sweet moment caught on camera

The U.S. relies on much more than the soldiers who serve them when it comes to war. Military Working Dogs serve alongside U.S. service members, risking their lives to keep our country safe. Unfortunately, when a service member and his MWD finish their tour of duty or retire, they are often separated. Occasionally, however, vets are able to adopt their former partners and bring them home.

Matthew Kropp was one such service member who was able to adopt his K9 partner, named Tina, from his time in the Iraq War. Both had served on an explosives detection team and had worked valiantly to keep explosives and other materials out of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. Eventually, however, their time together came to an end and Tina was sent back to the U.S. to retire.

After being separated from Tina, Kropp realized how much he missed her and the special bond that they shared. So, after returning home for some well-deserved leave, he decided to find out what had happened to his partner, hoping to adopt her if possible. His search soon led him to K9 Hero Haven of Pennsylvania.

Operating out of Herndon, K9 Hero Haven was able to find Tina – and she was available for adoption! Kropp was overjoyed and started making the arrangements to be reunited with his former companion. The biggest question on his mind was after one year apart would she even remember him?

To top it all off, the reunion was being filmed on camera. So, if Tina did not remember Kropp, it would be evident for all to see. As he waited nervously for the reunion to take place. His worriedness was evident as he stood amidst the cameras and flashing lights. Soon, Tina would arrive.

As for K9 Hero Haven, the organization has been around since 2015. The 100 percent volunteer organization finds homes for K9s following their retirement from military and police service. In many cases, the organization tries to place the dog with one of their original handlers or to at least place them with another veteran or law enforcement officer.

As Tina saw Kropp, the veteran was relieved to see that she remembered him. She charged right up to him and started licking his face. Kropp made sure to give her plenty of belly rubs to welcome her before formally adopting her bringing her home. Kropp did eventually have to return to Iraq to fulfill his military duties but looks forward to the time he can spend with his former partner in the future.
