Vets call bait dog who lost entire part of face ‘worst case ever’ – but look at her now
Dogfighting is a crime! The only victims of this cruel bloodsport are the poor dogs that are forced to do what they don’t really want to do.
The heartless people involved in this illegal activity milk money by making dogs fight until one is either no longer able to continue or worse, dead.
It’s not just a crime, dogfighting is animal cruelty!
It’s indeed sad because, even though dogfighting is already considered an illegal activity in most countries around the world, it is still legal in some countries like Japan, parts of Russia, and Albania.
“Dogfighting is more than just a crime. It’s a deep, persistent stain on our national character that, despite being illegal in every state, still disgraces our culture with a shockingly wide diversity of locations, participants and onlookers,” says the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) President & CEO, Matt Bershadker
Abigail is a Pitbull who was just about 3 years old when she was abandoned by some members of an unknown dogfighting ring.
It was clear that she was used as a bait dog.
In fact, it looked like someone tried to rearrange her face beyond something recognizable. She was teetering between life and death.
She had deep wounds on her head, gashes on her back, and a giant wound on her face.
Her rescuers also saw that an entire portion of her face was gone.
Not only that, but her right ear was also missing.
The kind of life that she had to live every day is hard to imagine. Really, it’s almost impossible to fathom. The poor pup.
What is a bait dog?
To put it into its simplest terms, a bait dog serves as the punching bag of an actual fighting dog.
A website also described the role of bait dogs as:
“…a punching bag for game (fighting) dogs. Except we all know that dogs don’t punch, they bite and tear. Dog fighters use bait dogs to let their game dogs practice mutilating another dog, without being harmed in the process. To ensure their dogs aren’t damaged, they will either use duct tape to tape the bait dog’s mouth shut, or break out their teeth so the bait dog can’t fight back. They also either, put them in a pit, or tie them to a tree or pole, so that they can’t get away from the game dogs. And I did say dogs, plural because they generally unleash several dogs on one bait dog at the same time. It makes the game dogs more aggressive since there is competition.”
The practice is stomach-turning, to say the least.
Abigail’s helpless condition was critical and very painful to watch.
Her brave veterinarians didn’t give up on her though. They knew her precious life was on the line. They performed multiple operations on the dog to save her and monitored her diligently for weeks.
Her rescuers shared her horrendous story on social media.
The world saw Abigails’ tragic story and help came pouring through from places across the globe.
Prayers were offered to make her strong and to uplift her spirits in her battle. They also gave her fashionable hats to cover her missing ear.
Then, a miracle happened!
With the help of her rescuers, vets, and the countless people who helped and prayed for her, Abigail made a fast recovery.
Her positive and playful character eventually started to shine brighter than her wounds and scars. She’s without a doubt, a fighter! Way to go, Abigail!
She still needs a couple of surgeries to fully recover.
Though that’s the case, Abigail has already shown the world what a positive outlook and a lot of love can do. Not to mention her admiration for her fashionable hats and bonnets.
She doesn’t seem to hold any grudges against humans.
She’s confident that her new human companions will never let her be hurt again.
