Principal steps forward after video emerges of teens surrounding elderly man on the street

“Kids these days!” It’s a phrase often said with disdain, triggered by an incident that exhibits questionable behavior. Mostly uttered by adults who grew up in quite conservative and refined times (and even millennials who know better than to laugh and brush off misconduct), it’s a saying that unfairly generalizes the younger generation into a not-so-admirable category.

After all, not all young ones are purposely defiant. Not convinced yet? Perhaps this story will help.

The adolescent years may very much bring back memories of the terrible two’s but just like the challenging toddler phase, it’s also filled with lots of sweet surprises and incredible moments.

Meet these 9th-grade students from William Allen High School who weren’t aware that their good deed was caught on camera.

Makayla Ward recalls how it all began.

“A lady comes to us and she is like ‘can you watch that man over there,’ and we see the man in the distance.”

They didn’t just stand there to keep an eye on him – they actually approached him and assisted him as he struggled to walk steadily.

Jose Cerda adds,

“We saw him walking at a steady pace for a second and then he looked like he was staggering a little bit. He was holding onto things.”

According to Lashante Smith, they decided to ask him if he needed help, and the man said yes.

The group of friends did not hesitate to lend a hand.

They helped him down the street, not realizing a passerby filled with pride was filming it all.

Seeing the man struggle, the quick-thinking teens also persuaded the man to sit and rest as they waited for an ambulance.

The video immediately went viral on Facebook, much to the surprise of the group of friends. Jose Cerda doesn’t seem to think their actions were a big deal. In fact, the young man believes they simply did “what anyone should do” in the same situation.

The school administrators were proud of the behavior their students demonstrated. William Allen High School principal Shannon Mayfield says,

”It makes me proud, it makes the community proud. That’s the way to lift people up, that’s what we are all about.”

The group of friends has hopefully inspired their peers and many others to follow suit by readily helping a hand to those in need. They prove that teenagers aren’t as difficult as people make them out to be and that anyone can truly make a difference.

It may take a while to convince the rest of the world to give today’s youth a chance but thanks to people like these teenagers, more people are able to see just how awesome “kids these days” can really be.

The teens caught on video carrying out a good deed hope that many others step up without hesitation. Kudos to their parents for raising such kind children! Here’s hoping more moms and dads steer their kids in the right direction.
