Vince Gill steals hearts with his performance of “Go Rest High on That Mountain”

Few musicians can embrace their age and take the timbre of decades of singing in stride. Truly, not every genre of music lends itself to this.

Pop music favors the young and new, whereas rock music can be far too energetic for an aging performer – Keith Richards and Mick Jagger obviously being notable exceptions.

Country music, however, lends itself to a voice that changes with age.

Vince Gill is one artist who sounds (arguably) even better now than he did 40 years ago.

After a long and illustrious musical career, he is still creating music for those who enjoy country music.

Throughout his career, Gill has released over 20 albums and sold over 26 million copies.

He has now released a new version of his song “Go Rest High On That Mountain.”

It’s a song written by Gill, and as you can see in the video of his most recent rendition, the theme is still present.

The video starts gently, with piano and guitar.

Gill is backlit in melancholy focus as the camera pans down. His eyes are lowered sadly, and it’s clear that he’s about to deliver a solemn performance.

Gill attaches a lot of significance to the song.

When Keith Whitley, a country music singer, died in 1989, Gill began writing “Go Rest High On That Mountain.” However, he did not finish the song for several years.

Sadly, Bob, Gill’s older brother, died of a heart attack in 1993. This appears to have motivated Gill to finish the song, which was released in August 1995.

Gill’s heart can be heard in his words as he sings.

Every line Gill sings is laden with the weight of loss and he truly pours his heart out.

All that time has done for Gill’s performance is add weight to it.

The guitar is ruminating.

Gill’s soft voice is given pace and momentum by the minor chords he plays while singing.

He uses the guitar as an extension of his soul in true country style, with a heavy heart. He has a deep country sound and a distinct style that you can hear anywhere.

The guitar isn’t the only instrument that contributes to the song.

The guitar is accompanied by a slow, delicately played piano.

The piano softly played alongside the guitar. Then, of course, Gill’s lovely voice adds an element reminiscent of some of history’s greatest ballads.

The video takes a slightly different approach to Gill’s theme song.

The video makes a clear point by showing many clips of families at military services. And sweeping shots of seemingly endless fields of headstones.

He performed the beautiful rendition “Go Rest High On The Mountain” at the 2021 National Memorial Day Concert. This was a tribute to all those who gave their lives in the service of their country.

Many people online commended his remarkable work.

“Your song writing, singing, and guitar are phenomenal! A true blessing directly from God. Thank you for sharing!”
