Walmart cashier sings goosebump-inducing version of Dolly Parton hit
World, meet Kayla Slone.
She’s proof that big talent can hide in even the smallest of towns.
Our modern-day world is used to seeing talent make it to the big time with shows such as American Idol and The Voice. But come to find out there’s also a chance for the talent that doesn’t get to audition. Technology makes it easy to capture any moment, in the moment.
You just never know who is watching or listening, and Slone’s surprising vocals in 2013 were no exception – in fact, they were exceptional!
Her video blew the internet away one day while she sang working at her cash register.
Sloan worked as a cashier in a Logan, West Virginia Walmart. In addition, she was a budding country music vocalist just waiting to be discovered.
Her country vocals made their rounds after she was recorded singing from the check-out line she worked in. After that, her passion for singing quickly became evident when she decided to share her voice with the world. She dreamt of performing at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, but figured it was merely a dream. Sloan told ABC News that she even recorded an album from home at age 15.
Unable to keep her love for music bottled up, Slone stole the hearts of customers one day as she sang out a tune at work.
Her impromptu performance was captured by someone’s cellphone. Slone’s sweet country voice offered a perfect rendition of Dolly Parton’s 1971 hit, “Coat of Many Colors”.
The video features a somewhat bashful girl, donning her employee nametag, singing a flawless cover of the beloved country classic.
With eyes softly focused on the store, and the voice of an angel, you can hear Slone singing Parton’s touchingly candid lyrics:
“Although we had no money
I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me”
It didn’t take long for Slone’s simply stunning performance to go viral. Her talent quickly rose to recognition across the internet.
Instant fans left comments like:
“We’ve got a new Dolly sensation on our hands. She is amazing!”
All of a sudden, the small-town Walmart cashier had big-time fans!
Slone began to garner recognition, and people even sought her out at the store. ABC News came to do an interview, covering her viral voice. During the interview, Slone admitted to her dreams of appearing on the Grand Ole Opry.
And the Grand Ole Opry is exactly where she landed!
The people who run the Opry caught wind of her news interview and agreed to help make her dreams come true. Pete Fisher, the vice president, and general manager for the Opry revealed to ABC News:
“Country music at its best is about real people singing real stories about real life. How the chips fall often times in the music industry can be very hard to predict, but it starts with a voice and a passion and we’re happy to give her a stage.”
Slone and her husband, a coal miner, traveled to Nashville to see the famous stage for themselves.
Soon thereafter, Slone fulfilled the opportunity of a lifetime: to perform on a stage grounded in country music history.
It was on that stage that she chose to sing Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter”, proving that dreams really do come true!
From check-out line to Grand Ole Opry, she is proof that talent is everywhere! Watch both of Slone’s jaw-dropping performances for yourself in the videos below.
