Student wants to see what wasps will do with colored paper – shares surprising photos online
Rarely do science experiments result in something visually stunning. Yet that’s exactly what happened this time!
Wasps have a pretty bad reputation. They’re known as the more aggressive cousins of bees. But one student has discovered a whole new way to make people appreciate their creative side.
Mattia Menchetti is an Italian biology student. He’s fascinated with the behavioral instincts of different animals and has produced some really amazing work. But his wasp experiment has gone viral.
It all began when Menchetti was studying paper wasps. Paper wasps have that name because they like to build nests out of dead wood and plant stems, which they chew into a papery pulp before building.
Menchettti wanted to see what would happen if he gave the wasps colorful construction paper. And the wasps didn’t disappoint. Over time, they built stunning rainbow-colored nests.
The student began this experiment by allowing the wasps to create nests with yellow paper. As the experiment continued, he gave them different colored paper.
The final nests are so unique. Just look at the different colors! You have to respect Menchetti for coming up with this idea. The world would be a far duller place without this sight!
It seems apt for an Italian to have come up with such a visually beautiful scientific experiment.
After all, many of the world’s greatest artists are or were Italian, such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Caravaggio. It seems like Italians are so artistic, even the scientists have a strong sense of aesthetics.
This is also impressive enough to give anyone a whole new appreciation of wasps.
If you think about it, wasp nests in themselves are amazing creations. Truly, wasps aren’t just annoying creatures that will sting you, but miraculous in their own right!
In fact, wasps are indeed misunderstood. According to National Geographic, only a few wasp species are aggressive stinging animals.
The site even says that “all do far more good for humans by controlling pest insect populations than harm.” In fact, wasps are routinely deployed by people in the agriculture industry to prevent pests from preying on crops. So now you know that you should be thankful for wasps! You probably never thought you’d think that!
Wasps are also much more colorful animals than you realize, and that’s without the inclusion of colorful construction paper.
National Geographic also states that there are wasp species that come in every color imaginable, even “metallic blue, and bright red.”
One thing that does unite wasp species though is nest building.
But some wasps like to build bigger nests than others. In Fact, in Alabama, yellow jacket wasps have been known to make nests the size of cars. But sadly, they weren’t as colorful as Menchetti’s nests!
And did you know that unlike bees, wasps have the ability to sting repeatedly!?
If you did already know that fact, hopefully, you didn’t find out the hard way. Also, only female wasps have the ability to sting, because the stingers are made from a modified version of the animal’s egg-laying organ.
Menchetti has also shown off a short video of the wasps in action as they build a colorful nest. The footage is weirdly fascinating. Just watch it below!
