Here’s the real reason why Aldi meat is so cheap

The meat in Aldi is amazingly cheap.

How does Aldi manage it? Aldi customers have reaped the benefits of low-cost but high-quality meat.

Mashed has now pulled back the curtain to reveal how Aldi accomplishes this feat.

If you shop at Aldi and have ever wondered why their meats are so affordable, sit back and keep reading.

Karl and Theodore Albrecht, two brothers founded Aldi Supermarkets in 1946. It happened after they took over their mother’s store in Essen, Germany.

“Aldi is the common brand of two German family owned discount supermarket chains with over 10,000 stores in 20 countries, and an estimated combined turnover of more than €50 billion.”

Aldi was divided into two companies in 1966 — Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd.

These two companies operate over 1,600 stores in the United States, including the well-known Trader Joe’s grocery stores.

So, how does Aldi provide inexpensive meats?

Aldi prefers to keep things small. This includes the number of employees on the job as well as the number of products on the shelf.

They don’t sell expensive cuts of meat.

This keeps their inventory to a minimum, lowering overhead and reducing the likelihood of unsold products going to waste.

Aldi considers buying meat from local farms. If the meat supply was located hundreds of miles away, this would mean less travel to pay for.

Aldi also avoids stocking well-known band names.

They use lesser-known brands in addition to selling their own.

And anyone who has shopped at Trader Joe’s knows that the house brand is an important part of the shopping experience.

Adli’s Director of Operations, Tom Cindel, has this to say about brand names:

“If you’re hell-bent on having a certain brand, you may not find that, but what we’re offering is the same quality or better. And we tested for that incredibly carefully.”

Aldi does not have a butcher on-site.

You won’t get your meat cut to your specifications at Aldi, but you will save money when you pay at the counter.

Butchers in supermarkets start around $30k per year, and because Aldi does not have that expense, they pass the savings on to you.

Tom Cindel says, “Behind the scenes of traditional grocery stores, everything you do gets added to the cost of the product. Operating a deli or pharmacy is built into the price of that – but not at Aldi.”

Customers love the meats and the low prices at Aldi.

On Chowhound, one Aldi fan commented,

“I was really surprised at how ultra-fresh the meat items appeared. I bought a pack of pork chops and baby back ribs two days ago and the meat still looks like it was processed today.”

Many YouTubers are documenting their Aldi shopping trips.

“I always shop at Aldi for my groceries, their meat is top quality and much cheaper that supermarkets. Their weekly specials are always interesting, good value and quality”

Another person left a comment saying,

“I love Aldi and was afraid this would be a bad reveal, so I’m glad to hear what I already believed to be true. I live on their produce and meat/poultry/fish, plus amazing bacon and fresh eggs. Cheap but good olive oil, condiments and milk tops it off!”
