Scientists finally explain why cats like certain people more than others

There is a shared saying among cat lovers that a cat chooses its human and not the other way around. As affectionate as they can be, cats are also known for being finicky. They do not warm up to humans easily.

This is not to say that cats are difficult. Just like human beings, each cat has a personality. To them, there are some humans who are easier to connect to more than others.

In a family with cats for example, many notice that the one who feeds or bathes them is not necessarily the kitty’s favorite person. Cats are very independent. They look beyond who can provide their basic needs. It appears that they prefer those that understand their emotional needs.

Cats like those who respect personal space

Cat owners are aware that their pets have mood swings. It does not mean that they are complicated to take care of. They are just very smart with a wide range of emotions.

One mistake that new cat owners make is that they do not leave room their cats alone. Felines are sweet and loyal but they are also fiercely independent. They need to have alone time to gain more energy. They are generally introverts.

Being introverts do not mean that they are anti-social. It just means that they get grumpy after too much interaction. So, when there are humans around who know when to step back, cats notice.

The humans who leave them peacefully will also be the ones who gets the most affection when the kitties are ready. It is their way of thanking those humans for respecting their personal space.

As mentioned, each cat is different. Some cats love being outdoors while others can sit by the window sill for hours. When a cat forms a closer bond with a human, it might be because the human and the kitty have common personality traits. These similarities become more pronounced over time.

Cats have great observation skills. They are instinctive about which human share the most with them. For example, adventurous cats will most likely choose humans who love mountain climbing and hiking. A quiet human will probably attract a very serene furball.

Cats know who to trust

Those who adopted stray cats can sometimes run into difficulties. There are anecdotes of strays not trusting their moms and dads immediately. This can be caused by traumatic experiences that these felines have had to go through.

In certain instances, the cat is scared of the adoptive parent. It could largely be because the human resembles someone that scared the feline in the past. This can be a difficult hurdle to get through when you want to build a deep bond with a cat.

Similarly, the new mom or dad may have done something that pushed the wrong buttons. A common example is when a human accidentally steps on their baby’s tail too many times. Whether the act is intentional or not, these actions can lead to a loss of affection from cat to human.

It is in the genes

Cat behavioral experts claim that some breeds can only be attached to one person. These breeds include Bengals, Himalayan, Siamese, and Norwegian Forest Cats. Once these find a person they like, it can be very difficult to get in between that relationship.

Of course, every cat is different. While breeds play a factor, it does not mean that every single one will fit the stereotype. Breeds’ behavioural patterns are merely guidelines for cat owners.

Do not give up

If you are having a difficult time bonding with your cat, do not give up. Be more observant of what your cat likes and things will change. Once you acknowledge that each cat is made differently, you will be able to adjust your actions to what is best for you and your kitty.
