The real reason why cats like some people and not others
Cats are picky creatures, especially when it comes to humans. But why do they shun certain people? Here’re the reasons.
When a family brings a cat into the home, everyone wants to be the new addition’s favorite. But of course, only the cat can decide who to snuggle up to most often.
And sometimes, the cat’s choice is super weird. You’d expect the person who feeds them the most to be the favorite. But that is not always the case.
Here’s why a cat may like someone other than their primary food giver:
1. They may favor someone who lets them have personal space
Some people can show too much affection to a cat. Sure, cats like being pet sometimes, but not all the time. If you’re paying them too much attention, then that can seriously piss them off.
So the cat will naturally gravitate to the person who knows to pet them only when they want it.
Sure, it’s tough to not want to cuddle your cat all the time. But if you let your cat come to you for petting, then your bond will grow stronger!
2. They can tell who has a similar personality to them
Some cats love to play with string. Others just like to snooze all day. And cats soon learn who is playful, and who is sleepy, like them. Sure, this is kind of like how cats respect those who give them personal space. But this goes deeper than that. Cats pick up on who has a similar personality to them. And naturally, they will stick with someone who aligns with their attitudes!
3. A human could remind them of their difficult past
You may have adopted a cat with a difficult past. And if one of the people they live with reminds them of the person who made their life difficult, then the cat will naturally be wary. It can be hard to tell that this is the case. After all, you probably won’t know that your cat previously had a bad run-in with someone who had a similar hair color or age or even scent as you.
If your cat associates you with someone bad from their past, then the only course of action is to wait it out. Eventually, the cat will learn to trust you. It can take some time. But in the end, you’ll form a bond.
4. Some breeds only form connections with one person
Sadly, some cats are genetically disposed to only bond with one individual. For example, Manx, Somali and Turkish Angora cats are prone to one-person-bonding. Of course, they can get along with everyone in a houseold, but it’s likely that once they’ve picked a favorite, that person will remain the favorite for good!
At the end of the day, every cat is different.
That means that every time you bring one into your home, you’ll have a unique experience. The most important thing is for everyone in the household to give them a happy life. You may or may not become their favorite, but they’re a part of your family nonetheless!
