Scientists explain why your cat is constantly staring at you

If youâre a cat owner, you might notice that your furry little friend stares at you quite often. They have a tendency to follow your every move around the house with their eyes and thereâs no doubt that it can come off as a little bit creepy. Are they trying to tell you something? Are they trying to take over the world? These are all things that you have probably wondered at some point if you live with a cat.

But fear not, because youâre not the only person who has felt this way. And apparently, there could actually be a couple of different reasons why they canât take their eyes off of you.
Some people think itâs in our heads.

One of the first âreasoningsâ behind this is that, well, it is just in our minds. They naturally donât blink as much as humans and because weâre not like that, it comes off as creepy. But itâs kind of just the nature of their bodies.
Also, cats might not even be aware that they are staring at us. They just like to look at everything⊠How we interpret it is potentially up to us.

Another theory is a rivalry.
Cats also do stare at other cats because they feel a sense of uncertainty or a sense of rivalry. Cats can be very territorial in that way. They will both go on to stare at each other until one finally looks away â this helps assert their dominance.

Staring at humans usually is not aggressive though.
Cats can use this as a way to fight with other cats but itâs rare that a cat will stare at their owner as an act of aggression. Itâs most likely just a way for them to non-verbally express love and affection for their favorite human!
Theyâre trying to tell us something.
If a cat is staring, that could also be them telling their owner that they are hungry or bored. It could also mean they are thirsty. Of course, when they want something, they canât really just be straightforward and tell you. This is their way of communicating.

Curiosity.
Cats can also stare out of curiosity, which is something that kind of ties in with them feeling bored. If they are just wandering around the house and they are curious to see what you are up to, they will literally look. They care about you â how else would they see what youâre doing? They have to look! Itâs also a form of entertainment.

Slow blinks.
Itâs a good thing if a cat stares at you and blinks very slowly. This is a sign that they feel comfortable and safe which is obviously important. A slow blink means that they look at you as a loved one and they do not feel threatened.

So after taking all of these things into consideration, hopefully it makes a little bit more sense. Next time you feel your catâs gaze, donât be creeped out. Instead, be happy! They are probably letting you know that they love you!
