The answer to this question is actually pretty simple. The Frito-like scent is the result of microorganisms living on the footpads. It’s actually caused by Pseudomonas and Proteus bacteria, according to The Animal Rescue Site.

“Since the hair grows longer between your dog’s toes, it can create a haven for the bacteria and creates the perfect environment for them to grow – hence the smell. But there is no need to worry, it’s all completely natural.” —The Animal Rescue Site

Sweat is the primary cause!

The cause of the Frito smell emitting from your dog’s paws goes a bit deeper.

Because dogs just sweat through the areas on their bodies that don’t have fur, that pretty much leaves their paws. And that sweat can get trapped in the fur between your dog’s toes.

Think of it this way: How do you smell when you sweat and don’t have deodorant on? This example helps show that your dog’s Frito-smelling feet are a pretty natural occurrence and shouldn’t be a major problem.

How to get rid of the smell

Maybe you like the smell of Fritos, and maybe you don’t … If you don’t, there’s a pretty easy solution. Wash your dog’s feet! Another trick to get rid of the scent is to trim the hair between your dog’s paws. But just make extra sure to be careful when trimming.

One note of caution, though, according to The Animal Rescue Site: Any excessive smell, swelling, or discharge from your dog’s paws could signal something more troubling. It could mean there is an infection. If so, you should take your pet to the vet for immediate treatment.

Other trouble signs include cuts that won’t heal and or recent injury to the foot or paw area.

So, if your dog’s feet start smelling like corn chips, just make sure it doesn’t become too big of a problem, and your beloved pet should be just fine.
