Tim had been a critical care nurse for a number of years. But while he was working, he contracted hepatitis C and later died from the disease.

Arlene was left alone to raise her three young sons.

She had no idea how to cope.

Arlene’s friends entered her onto the reality TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The producers could see that Arlene and her kids really deserved a life-changing renovation.

Ty Pennington and Arlene’s neighbors all came together to give this grieving family something to be happy about. The end results were better than anything Arlene could have imagined. She even described the renovation as being the answer to her prayers.

At first, Arlene could keep on top of her finances, even though times were tough.

But as the years went by, property taxes increased and she could no longer keep on top of them.

Eventually, she realized that her dream home was a risk of being taken away from her.

Then, unexpected emergencies put Arlene deeper into debt.

So Arlene contacted the mortgage company. Initially, she tried to work out a payment schedule that worked. But when the company was not willing to give the widow any leeway, she had to plead for more time to make payments.

Still, the company would not listen.

Arlene did what she could to raise the money to pay the mortgage. But before long, an eviction notice turned up in her mailbox.

Arlene appealed to a judge for help. But the legal system flat out denied Arlene’s case.

With nothing else to do, Arlene scrambled to try and find alternative accommodation for herself and her three sons by the move out date.

On the eviction day, Arlene had to rush to pack her belongings. As soon as the sheriff showed up, she would have to leave anything that wasn’t packed up behind.

Arlene’s neighbors were disgusted at the eviction. They couldn’t believe that this home, that they had helped renovate, was being taken away from her.

After the eviction, Arlene tried to look on the bright side. She reasoned that she, her children and her husband had had many happy memories in the home. No one could repossess those.

This story says a lot about American society.

The US is a place that will heartlessly throw the widow of a healthcare worker and her three children out of their dream home at the drop of a hat. It should be illegal to do this to the struggling family. Sadly, with the most expensive healthcare in the world, a legal system that prioritizes corporations over humans and almost no support system, America is a place that takes and takes. Of course, it’s important for people to pay the bills. But surely there needs to be something that ensures that people like Arlene and her kids are able to remain in their modest house when times get tough?
