Airline won’t let dad fly with newborn so widow brings them home with her
Energy doesn’t lie. When you meet someone for the first time and feel at ease, you start to relax and learn that this person is genuinely kind and free from ill intentions.
That’s why some people describe it as someone giving off “positive energy.”
It pays to be someone who gives off the same energy, too. You never know whose life you’ll help change or save, even.
Rubin Swift was fortunate to cross paths with someone whose kindness helped him navigate a complex situation.
After learning that he had a newborn daughter whom he was granted custody over, he immediately packed his bags and traveled to Arizona.
He saw his daughter for the first time at Banner University Medical Center, where he met a NICU volunteer, Joy Ringhofer.
The 78-year-old volunteer was warm and helpful right off the bat.
Rubin learned that Joy was recently widowed, and in turn, Joy discovered that the 43-year-old father had grown children from a prior marriage and four stepchildren with Tiffany, his 32-year-old wife.
The widow even offered to leave her contact details with Rubin and a ride to the airport on the day of his departure.
Rubin didn’t think much of the offer until airline policy halted his plans of coming home.
Frontier Airlines required proof of age for the infant, who needed to be at least seven days old to fly.
Rubin would have to wait at least a week to obtain the necessary documents.
Clueless, his only option was to sleep at the airport until the paperwork was ready.
He didn’t have enough money to rent a car, book a room at a hotel, and wait it out.
The dad told PEOPLE:
“I was out of money, and the hospital told me that I wouldn’t be able to get a birth certificate for seven days. I was worried that if security saw me sleeping at the airport with a newborn, they’d take her away and charge me with neglect. I was stuck.”
Then Rubin remembered Joy’s offer, so he gave her a call.
When Joy heard what had happened, she didn’t hesitate to drive back to the airport to pick up Rubin and his daughter.
She told PEOPLE:
“There are a lot of dangers out there, but there’s a lot of good, too. I’d enjoyed talking to Rubin at the hospital and helping him with the baby. He was polite and kind, and I could tell that he had a good heart.”
Rubin and Joy bonded over the next few days.
Rubin shared how his daughter’s face would always light up whenever she heard Joy’s voice.
The grateful dad enjoyed his conversations with Joy throughout his stay.
They would even go on walks together and visit Joy’s late husband’s gravesite.
When the birth certificate was finally ready, Rubin and Joy promised to stay in touch.
True enough, they regularly chatted over FaceTime, which made Joy happy.
“We just knew we’d always be in touch from that day forward. We started as strangers and ended up as good friends. Rubin is very grateful to me, but I’m also grateful to have had the opportunity.”
Joy’s kindness brought such relief to Rubin and his wife.
They didn’t think a stranger would go above and beyond to help them until things were sorted out.
More than the reward of finally being able to go home with his daughter, Rubin knew the actual prize in the situation was meeting an angel like Joy and being able to call her his friend for life.
