Airline refuses entry to dad & newborn on plane, widow overhears and says 'you're coming with me'
For anyone who’s ever traveled with children, they know how challenging it is. But when that involves a newborn baby, things become even more stressful. Taking things to another level is a dad traveling with a tiny infant. That’s not to say that men don’t make incredible fathers but this type of scenario can put all their parenting skills to the test.
After a long battle, one father by the name of Rubin Swift was granted custody of his beautiful daughter, Ru-Andria. Upon receiving the great news, he booked a flight on Frontier Airlines to go pick his baby up and take her home. No problem, right? Well, unfortunately, things didn’t go as smoothly as he expected. As a matter of fact, his dream quickly turned into a nightmare.
Time to board the plane
With overwhelming excitement, Rubin couldn’t wait to take his seat on the plane. But once he arrived at the gate, an airline representative told him he couldn’t board. There he was, a 43-year-old dad with an infant in arms and nowhere to go.
He did everything right
Rubin had followed all the laws in gaining custody of Ru-Andria. He even bonded with her at the Banner University Medical Center while she stayed in NICU for a few days. But unbeknownst to him, for an infant to fly on Frontier Airlines, they had to be, at a minimum, seven days old. The issue was this dad didn’t have documented proof of his daughter’s age so she couldn’t fly.
Rubin met an angel
While visiting his daughter at the hospital, this father met Joy Ringhofer who volunteered her time in NICU. At 78-years of age and recently windowed, this gave her purpose and the tiny babies the love they needed during their first days of life. At the time of their meeting, Rubin had no idea what a pivotal role this woman would play in his life and that of his newborn daughter.
He was stuck
Having written down Joy’s phone number and without knowing a soul where he was, she was his only hope. As Rubin stated, “I was out of money and the hospital told me that I wouldn’t be able to get a birth certificate for seven days. As you can imagine, the last thing he wanted to do was sleep at the airport with an infant. He was afraid that security would whisk her out of his arms.
Joy didn’t hesitate to help
Talk about a woman with a heart of gold. When Rubin called her and explained his situation, she immediately felt a sense of panic. She remembered this man and his precious daughter and couldn’t leave them stranded. Initially, it seemed there were no options but that’s when she came up with a plan.
I’ve got you
In spite of putting herself in potential danger, she told Rubin to stay put…she was on her way to get them. But not only did she pick this dad and his baby up at the airport, but she also opened her home to them until he could get the birth certificated needed. Although Rubin was shocked, he was eternally grateful.
Welcome to your temporary home
No, she didn’t know this man and he was of a different color, but that didn’t matter. “I’m black and she is white. I’m a stranger who grew up in the projects in the Bronx and she’s a great-grandmother who recently lost her husband, “Rubin said. For these individuals…the color of their skin wasn’t an issue. With a huge load lifted, the father and baby settled in.
Love doesn’t see color
While in her home, Joy worked with the proper agencies to ensure Rubin could get the paperwork needed. Once he received the birth certificate, it was time for this man and baby to return home to his wife and their kids.
But before that happened, Joy and Rubin promised to remain in touch, a promise they’ve kept. What started out as a disaster turned into a lifelong friendship and a new great-grandmother for baby Ru-Andria.
