Wife asks husband to make the bed - after 45 years of marriage, these are the results

Making your bed is something that some families do and others don’t. There are some good reasons to do it, especially if you enjoy the feeling of having “completed” something in the morning. Books have been written with the argument that there is value in this little practice. Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life… And Maybe the World is probably the most popular of them.

Whether or not you currently make your bed, this man hadn’t done it in 45 years.

Joanne Sterling had been the one to make the bed in the morning for over four decades. Each morning she would get up and routinely fix the sheets, comforter, and pillows on the mattress. After so many years, she was quite the pro.

Wanting a change, she decided to task her husband with making the bed.

While Jim seems to be a resourceful man, making the bed after a 45-year hiatus proved to be quite the challenge. Each day that he made the bed, his wife would document the experience and post it online. The results were quite hilarious.

The first attempt showed his inability to deal with pillows.

There was a season in the world where more pillows meant more style. As a kid, my parents bed was completely covered in pillows from front to back. When it was time to sleep, the pillows immediately went to the floor. They were “decorative” pillows.

Jim seems to struggle with what to do with the extra pillows on the bed.

The first attempt he gave resulted in him simply stacking the pillows on top of each other with the yellow ones on top. In hilarious fashion, Jim seemed to take inspiration from rock piling and use it on the bed.

The next try fell a bit flat.

The second try for Jim had him laying the pillows down flat on the bed. With no overlap and little touching, the pillows were placed flat halfway down the bed. Closer yet, Jim.

Boxed in.

The third attempt at the bedmaking had Jim thinking “inside the box”. Taking all the pillows and using them as walls, he created little boxes big enough to hide a small dog.

On and on, Jim got more and more creative with his bedmaking.

After the third try, Jim got creative. Starting with the Eiffel Tower approach, he stacked them all up in sequential order in the middle of the bed, making a little tower. Subsequent “made beds” used other elements from around the house or even “negative space”.

One of the best was when Jim went on strike.

When Joanne came in one day, she noticed that the bed wasn’t made. When she asked about it, Jim claimed he was on strike.

“Jim was put in charge of making the bed because I have always taken care of everything in the house while he was working. Now that we are retired, it’s time for him to pull his own weight around here!”

From toys to furniture, Jim used everything in his house to make the bed at some point.

Flamingos, stuffed animals, and stools all adorned the bed while Jim was in charge. The couple had some great laughs and learned about each other along the way.

It seems that this is what happens when you go 45 years without realizing how a bed should be made. “We try to make our relationship last by making each other laugh. I’m so glad people have been able to relate during this difficult time.”
