Winery’s hardworking boxer is helping deliver wine during social distancing

Many businesses have had to shut their doors as coronavirus has gripped the nation. This is being done to try and slow its spread and protect those most vulnerable to the virus. In many cases, though, businesses have found unique solutions to still serve their customers while under quarantine. Take Stone House Urban Winery in Hagerstown, Maryland, for instance, which has turned to a special distribution method for deliveries.

The delivery person is none other than the company owner’s boxer, named Soda Pup. At 75 pounds, Soda has taken on the job of delivering the wine to the Winery’s customers. At 11 years old, this delivery dog has been fitted with special saddlebags that can hold up to two bottles of wine. This allows the winery to deliver its product to customers safely and with no contact.

Winery co-owner Lori Yata was the one who came up with the idea. She did it out of a desire to promote social distancing. The winery announced the delivery service in a post on its Facebook page, stating:

“Mom says that we all have to pitch in and pull our weight — that includes me as well. So, if you are out shopping and have kids in the car, or just want to keep your distance from other folks, give us a call and place your order.”

Soda has been a regular at the winery for about a year and loves all of the attention that customers had given him before his new job started. The new role came about after his owner, Yata, noticed how sad he looked with no customers coming in due to the quarantine.

“I was sitting with my daughter-in-law and told her how sad Soda seemed, and she said is there a way you can have Soda deliver their wine,” Yata told E! News. “So, I hopped online and found a vest with side pockets, perfect to hold two bottles of wine.”

The customers loved the idea, with some coming from as far away as Alexandria, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., just to have Soda deliver their wine to them.

“This has definitely put some much-needed pep in his step during these trying times and smiles on many faces,” Yata said.

The winery offers a variety of different wines for its clientele, including reds, whites, dessert, and fruit wines. It also has a rose wine, named Tickled Pink, which is a customer favorite. Fortunately, Soda does not need to worry about being overworked. In a Facebook post, the winery stated:

“I never carry more than two bottles of wine. I never make more than one trip per customer. Sometimes I don’t have wine in my sack at all. I just to go out and meet people when they come to buy their wine. When I’m tired, I lay on my BIG comfy bed and nap. My mom knows what is best for me and would never do anything that would cause me harm!”
