Beautiful wolves find trail cam in the forest – and the footage is winning hearts

Opened in 1872, Yellowstone National Park was the first park of its kind in the U.S. Known for its large amount of wildlife and natural wonders, the park soon became a favorite destination for tourists from around the world. As a part of their work, park rangers manage the many programs offered at the par. In addition to this, they also study and reintroduce species into the park’s robust ecosystem.

In 1995, gray wolves began to be released into the park – many of them captured in Canada, across America’s northern border. Over the years, this wolf population has grown, being monitored by park rangers and observed by the many tourists who visit the park each year.

As a part of their research, park rangers have set up trail cams around the park to observe the wolves in their natural habitat. However, the rangers were given a special treat when a pack of wolves was captured on film interacting with one of the cameras.

When the wolves enter into frame, you can see a look of recognition on the lead wolf’s face as he spots the trail camera. Walking up to the camera, he gives it a good sniff before licking it a few times. As the camera gets a close-up of the wolf’s fur, it also captures the rest of the pack following their leader. Finally, the footage ends, but not before giving viewers a glimpse into the life of these amazing animals.

A post by the Park Service of the encounter goes viral

The National Park Service posted the video on the Yellowstone Facebook. There, the footage earned over 1.8 million views and 54,000 likes. It was also shared over 10,000 times by delighted followers of the page. The page also posted a comment on the video, stating:

“The most pressing issue facing wolves today is us, humans. Roughly 80% of wolves in the northern Rockies die from human-related causes. The value we place on intact ecosystems and our attitudes towards predators will continue to influence their future as a species.”
