Fate really moves in mysterious ways.

Aisha Nieves thought she’d never find another reliable pet like Kovu, a dog that she lost more than two years. Little did she know that on her journey to finding her previous dog’s replacement, she’d be reunited with him.

She brought Kovu home when the doggo was still seven weeks old and had been with them for five years since 2014. They named the pooch after a lion cub from Disney’s animated Lion King sequel movies. The animated lion character also had a scar above his eye like Kovu who got his back in 2019 when he tried to flee from her home through a hole in her gate.

One night, Aisha came home and found it odd when Kovu wasn’t there to greet her with kisses and cuddles. At that moment, she was four months pregnant with her younger son and she was worried sick because she had no idea where her pooch went.

“I had a lot of emotions going through me,” she said while recalling that frightful moment. “I was crying, thinking the worst, thinking somebody kidnapped or hurt him. I was just devastated. He was there for me through everything, heartbreaks, ups and downs, and now he was gone. It was so hard to accept.”

It’s every dog owner’s fear.

Losing a pet isn’t easy, especially in Aisha’s case, Kovu went missing with no traces of him anywhere near. She shared that Kovu was like a “baby” to her because the dog would go with her anywhere and sleep with her on the bed.

Little did she know, the local humane society picked her dog up after residents reported that they found him in someone’s yard. He then received treatment for four months until he was ready to be put up for adoption.

All those time, Aisha was still looking for her missing baby dog, and right when she asked the humane society to ask if they had seen Kovu, the doggo was no longer under their care. In October of the same year when Aisha lost Kovu, he was adopted by a family who was eventually forced to return him to the shelter after they got evicted from their home.

The search finally came to an end.

One fateful day, Aisha was just randomly browsing through the dogs that were available for adoption at the Lehigh County Humane Society’s (LCHS) website. She was hoping to find a new dog who would replace her canine when suddenly, she saw a pooch who looked exactly like Kovu.

Although at first, she thought that it can’t be her baby dog. But when she gave the photo a closer look, she realized that just like Kovu, the tan pitbull-rottweiler mix also had a small scar above his eye.

Later on, she learned that the LCHS named the dog “Ash.” However, it didn’t stop her from thinking that it might be really her Kovu. She called LCHS and told them her story, soon, they advised Aisha to provide them with a photo of Kovu and an adoption fee to get him back.

When the two finally met each other again after more than two years of separation, it felt like they were never apart from each other.

“I automatically go on the floor, like to get down, get ready, because I know he’s going to jump on me,” Aisha said. “As soon as he started coming, he started squealing and screaming and yelling.”

“I love him so much, like I’m just so happy he’s back,” she added.
