Woman in one-piece allegedly asked to leave pool because her curves disturbed others

Bathing suits show a lot of skin – that’s just how they’re made. And while some can be more risqué than others, if someone is making an honest effort to cover anything illegal to show in public, it’s up to everyone else to simply deal with it.

But that’s not what happened to Tori Jenkins in 2017.

Jenkins and her fiancé Tyler Newman were shocked when a fellow tenant of the Smoky Crossing Apartments – the apartment complex where they live and pay to help maintain the pool – said the woman’s one-piece bathing suit was inappropriate.

The dress rules at the pool? Simply “Duly appropriate attire must be worn at all times, no cut-offs,” according to Jenkins.

She was in the right.

Nevertheless, management allegedly gave her the choice of changing her swimsuit, putting on shorts, or leaving since they deemed her to be wearing a “thong” bathing suit that was inappropriate for the teen boys at the complex to look at.

Yes, you read that right – we need to protect the eyes of teen boys from women’s perfectly natural bodies. It’s ridiculous.

“She basically told me that if I didn’t have kids I wouldn’t understand, if her kids were at the pool she wouldn’t want me in that swimsuit, how inappropriate I looked, and then she told me that there were a lot of teenage boys at the complex that I don’t need to be exciting,” said Jenkins.

When the couple went to speak to management in private, they were told to take photos of her in the suit so they could better understand why it wasn’t appropriate for children to gaze upon.

Again, you read that right. She was asked to examine her body in photos to see why it might be problematic for boys.

Unbelievable.

And worse? It wasn’t really about the bathing suit. It was about her body and her curves. Apparently, having them means that she’s responsible for other people sexualizing her. It would almost be laughable if it weren’t so infuriating.

“She was told that her body because it’s built more curvy than others, is ‘too inappropriate’ for children to be around,” Newman told WATE News. “She was told ‘there are a lot of teenage boys in this complex, and you don’t need to excite them.’”

Apparently, it didn’t matter that Jenkins had no interest in exciting them.

Naturally, Jenkins was humiliated. Newman summed up the situation perfectly:

“Today, my fiancée was told that she is less important than how men feel around her.”

In a statement, Smoky Crossing said they requested Jenkins wrap a towel around herself while walking around the pool but was never asked to leave. Of course, that doesn’t make it any better – it’s still about judging a woman’s body and punishing her for it just because of the way someone else might look at it.

Apparently, personal responsibility isn’t high on the list of desirable traits for people at this apartment complex.

As you can see, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with Jenkins’ bathing suit nor her body.

When she posted some photos online, she got even more inappropriate comments, sexualizing her body despite the fact that she’s simply wearing a one-piece suit that fits just fine.

Commenters on news reports generally had enough sense to find the whole thing absurd:

“Aren’t MOST bathing suits revealing? I mean it’s a bathing suit, it’s meant to be small and allow for suntans or minimal resistance while in water. People have WAY too many hang ups about the human body.”
