Woman builds amazing house for her cats using old boxes

For pet owners, there are few experiences more rewarding than seeing your furry pals become best friends.

Huckleberry and Floyd are a pair of very active cats who have been inseparable since the moment they met.

Their outgoing dispositions are a recipe for fun shenanigans. They spend their days causing more antics around the house than their mother can keep up with.

“Everyday stuff is being knocked over, things are broken, they just love playing,” Gentry Sanders, the pair’s mom, told The Dodo.

In attempts to protect her stuff from getting used as playthings, she has bought the cats many toys, but there is little they enjoy more than plain old cardboard boxes.

Whenever a package gets delivered she makes sure to give them the box, which they happily spend hours hanging out in.

Sanders is naturally creative and a graphic designer, so knowing how much her cats enjoy normal boxes, she began thinking of ways to make it better.

Ultimately, she decided to build her boys a whole new house!

“I figured I could just use the boxes to make something cute since they were always sitting out in my house,” Sanders said. “I love mid-century style and figured, ‘Why not a mid-century house?’”

Pulling from her design experience and affinity for DIY projects, she swiftly collected the materials she needed and got to work on the cardboard cat house.

Sanders decided to document the entire process so that others could build cardboard houses for their cats, or even just for fun!

After spending an entire weekend working under the curious eyes of Huckleberry and Floyd, she was nearly done!

All that was left to do was paint. Then she could present it to the cats and post the tutorial on her blog for everyone else to enjoy.

“I can’t do anything in my house without them being involved in it,” Sanders said. “They loved the cutting of the cardboard because they got to lay on it and chew it. Surprisingly, they left me alone when I painted but I purposefully planned that during their afternoon nap time.”

After investing a considerable amount of time constructing the miniature mid-century home, she was nervous that the cats wouldn’t appreciate it.

Nervously, she unveiled the completed project.

And they loved it!

“They immediately were all over it and Floyd put his catnip banana inside and started chewing on it,” Sanders said.

Huckleberry and Floyd were thrilled by their new and improved cat house. They clearly love having a special place to hang out together, one that they can call their own.

Even as time has gone by, the cats continue to use their cardboard house regularly.

“Since then, Huck sleeps in it all the time while I am working,” Sanders said. “Floyd either sleeps in it or works on tearing apart his catnip toys. I am honestly surprised how much they love it.”

These two cats seem to know how lucky they are to have such a patient and talented mother.
