Woman calls cop ‘abusive’ when he makes her wait in the same hot car she left her dog in

Shelly Nicholas did something you are never supposed to do: she left her dog in a parked car on a sweltering hot day. She was confronted by a police officer but what happened next was rather unusual.

Shelly would end up asking the local media to investigate what she referred to as “abusive” actions by the police officer. What their investigation found told a different story altogether, however.

The woman was confronted by a police officer for leaving the dog in a hot car.

Shelly contacted KOB News and asked them to investigate after she says a police officer forced her to sit in a hot car with the windows rolled up. The officer in question was wearing a lapel camera and it captured exactly what went down during this interaction.

Officer Vincent Kreischer is a police officer in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico and he was the one who noticed that a dog was inside a parked vehicle that day. The temperature was over 90 degrees outside, making this a potentially dangerous situation for the canine.

How hot a car can get after just 10 minutes.

When Officer Kreischer approached the woman she told him that she only left the dog in the car for 10 minutes. Officer Kreischer then informed her that in just 10 minutes her parked truck can reach 114 degrees. The woman, however, was not taking him seriously.

“It’s over 90 degrees, you keep a dog with no ventilation in there?” Officer Kreischer can be heard saying to the woman in the video.

Dangerous and against the law.

As the woman protested that she had done nothing wrong, Officer Kreischer attempted to explain the laws on leaving pets in hot cars.

“M’am you have to understand the law,” he said to her.

“I understand,” Shelly responded.

“I don’t think so cause you’re laughing and you think it’s funny,” Officer Kreischer answered back.

Officer writes her a ticket and asks her to wait inside her hot car.

The officer then instructed the woman to wait inside her hot car while he wrote her up a ticket. After all, she had just forced her dog to do the same thing.

“You can wait in the truck and close the door you know, since it’s not that hot,” he responded. He observed, “She gives me an attitude from word one, and then she doesn’t want to close the door. So I’m like, ‘Oh, but it’s OK if your dog does.’”

Shelly decided this was abuse and filed a complaint.

Woman files complaint on ‘abusive’ police officer.

Even though the officer was just asking the woman to do exactly what she had just done to her dog, she still felt his actions were grounds for a complaint.

“Officer Kreischer approached me and ordered that we enter the vehicle, close all doors, roll up all windows and sit there while he finished his paperwork without turning on the engine or AC,” her complaint reads.

Even though Shelly Nichols was the one who contacted KOB News about the incident, she would later decline to be interviewed on camera regarding it. Perhaps she made that decision after discovering footage of the incident existed.

People respond to Officer Kreischer’s actions.

Several people who have watched footage of Officer Kreischer’s actions that day on YouTube have felt compelled to leave a comment.

“Cop was “abusive”? What does that make you, lady? Then again he didn’t order you to sit in the car, just suggested. Dog didn’t have the option to say no,” one viewer wrote.
“What a great cop! He must be an animal lover. Obviously, the woman isn’t and shouldn’t have an animal. That dog should be taken away. Her laughing shows she really didn’t care!! She deserves to be left in a car and throw away the key!!!” Wrote another.
