Enraged woman calls the cops on a man for saying her dog should be leashed
People often do things in anger that they later regret. But just because someone is angry doesn’t excuse them abusing or neglecting an animal, as one New York woman is finding out the hard way.
When Amy Cooper took her dog for a walk in New York’s Central Park, she had no idea that her life would change, and not in a good way.
The Ramble in Central Park
The Ramble is a roughly 36-acre wooded area in the middle of Central Park that features natural beauty along a meandering path that is known for its solitude, as well as the large number of birds found living there.
This brings a variety of people to the area, including bird watchers and people walking their dogs. Dogs are required to be on a leash at all times in the area.
A confrontation
Christian Cooper was in the park bird watching when he came across a woman with her dog off-leash. Christian politely asked the woman, named Amy Cooper (who is not related to him), to put a leash on her dog.
When Amy refused to comply with his request, Christian called the dog over to offer him some treats.
Christian records the incident on his phone
This is a ploy Christian says that he often uses because the offending dog owner will usually clip on a leash to keep their dog away. Instead, this sent Amy into an angry rage.
Thinking quickly, Christian began recording the incident, knowing that he would need evidence to back up his claims in case the police were called.
Amy then told Christian and his sister, Melody, that was going to call the police and tell them that an “African American man was threatening” her. Christian, who is black, had not threatened her. He then told her to call the police.
Unfortunately, while Amy was on the phone with the police, she was dragging her poor dog around by the collar, choking him in the process.
Amy Cooper relinquishes her dog after the video goes viral
Christian’s sister shared the video on her Twitter, where it quickly went viral. In addition to losing her job because of the incident, Amy also had to relinquish her dog to the rescue organization where she had adopted him from years before, Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue. The rescue posted a status on its Facebook page about the dog:
“Thank you to the concerned public for reaching out to us about a video involving a dog that was adopted from our rescue a few years ago. As of this evening, the owner has voluntarily surrendered the dog in question to our rescue while this matter is being addressed. Our mission remains the health and safety of our rescued dogs. The dog is now in our rescue’s care, and he is safe and in good health.”
You can watch the video of this unfortunate incident below, but it’s great to know Amy’s dog is being looked after.
