Woman finds smashed duck nest with one, lone egg – then carries it in her bra for 35 days

Bringing a new life into the world is one of the most difficult — but also one of the most rewarding. Most of the time, that entails bringing a human baby into the world. But some people play a special role in other types of births.

That’s especially true when a human helps out a baby of another species. It’s heartwarming to see and it’s a good reminder that all living creatures want the same thing. That’s why these stories are so special.

Just like the story of Betsy from Visalia, California

Betsy is a wife and a mother of three. Since she has little ones of her own, she already has an understanding of the challenges of being a mom. But after a trip to the park, she was in for a whole new mothering experience.

Her family went to play pickleball

They headed to their local spot for a good place to play. But at the park, the family noticed something surprising. They found a duck’s nest. But then they saw an unusual and sad sight. Someone had smashed all the eggs inside of it. Still, they looked around to see if any of the eggs were undamaged.

There was one egg left

Luckily, one of the eggs was okay. While it wasn’t smashed, there was no way the mother would come back to the nest. Plus, the egg was slightly cracked, though it wasn’t leaking. Betsy knew she was going to have to do to something if she wanted the little baby bird inside to survive.

Her kids begged her to do something

The kids were worried about the egg. According to Betsy, “My kids were very upset about it … [they] found a lone egg with a small crack that wasn’t leaking and asked me to save it.” So, she decided to try to hatch the egg herself, even though she hadn’t ever done anything like that before.

She called a local wildlife group

They said they couldn’t help with the egg but they were willing to take the baby bird if she could get it to hatch. The experts also informed her she needed to use an incubator but she didn’t think she could afford one. She decided to try something different. Betsy knew the egg needed to be in a warm, humid place, so, she put it in her bra.

Betsy carried it for 35 whole days

In the end, Betsy ended up carrying the egg for a full 35 days. Not only that, but she turned it four to five times a day. She wanted to make sure this little bird was okay even if that meant going the extra mile to make sure it survived.

She had to make a hatching box

After 35 days, the egg began to hatch. Betsy had to make a hatching box out of some household materials. At first, the baby had some problems with the membrane of the shell but he managed to free himself. He couldn’t walk for a few days after he got out. Then finally, he managed to get up and walk around.

The duckling is fine now

The family named the duckling Thawn as it began to grow. He was soon able to walk without any problems and even swam around a puddle. They found a farm to take him to that he now calls home. Thawn is living a happy life in nature all because of what Betsy did to care for him when he was still in his egg.
