Woman keeps watermelon for an entire year – cuts it open to see what’s inside

When we buy fruit, we know it has a certain shelf-life. For many of us, it will begin to rot or smell to let us know it’s on its way out. Depending on the fruit, the maximum amount of time you can keep a piece of fruit is usually around the two-week mark or so.

So why did a woman decide to keep a watermelon for one year? Yes, we said one year!

Nita Gill says she bought the watermelon when it was nice and fresh. It was supposed to be carved for a video. Those watermelon carving videos come in handy because we all know how annoying it can be to carve a watermelon.

But, the melon wasn’t used for the show. Then, she and her family went on vacation. They left the melon behind. Even when they got back, the melon stayed in her fruit bowl for a while. We’re still not sure why it wasn’t tossed yet.

Since it wasn’t rotting, Gill decided to keep it around some more. Why not, right? Many of us would have just thrown it away at this point. Gill took the let’s wait and see what happens approach.

She not only kept her watermelon for one year, but she videotaped the moment when she decided to finally crack it open. Oh, and why at the one-year mark? Because it was finally showing some signs of mold. Yummy…

But, before the big reveal, she decided to do something else that may make you raise your eyebrow…again.

Yep, there she is with some party noisemakers. It was the watermelon’s first birthday after all and we all know how big a deal a first birthday is. You wouldn’t want your watermelon to feel left out now, would you? It lived a lot longer than many of its peers!

After the birthday fanfare and before cutting it open, she shows us a picture of the watermelon in its younger days when she first got it. You can tell that the year has had an affected the poor melon, and rightfully so. The shape is a bit different and there are some scars.

The big question is what’s inside? We know that you want to know, although you may not want to look.

Some 115,000 people have been curious too since the video went online three years ago. It’s one of those things that you just have to see to believe.

Now for the big reveal, are you ready?

So, the inside was in one word, gross! There were no bugs or creepy crawlers, but it was rotted, a bit slimy, and discolored inside. Certainly, it’s not something you’re going to bring along to your next picnic. It’s kind of impressive that she’s touching the watermelon without gloves, not sure we would be that brave!

What’s the lesson here? Cut your watermelons on time and don’t leave them around for a year!
