Woman dumps her dog in a trash can to move in with her new boyfriend

Moving is a difficult ordeal. As you pack your things you begin to realize you won’t be able to bring everything with you.

If you’re moving in with a partner, you will have to pare down to allow enough room for both your things.

We usually get rid of old furniture that may not be fashionable anymore. Other things could be books that we’ve already read and maybe don’t want to read again. We may choose to leave behind clothes and other things we don’t need anymore in our new life.

What about animals? It’s hard to imagine anyone who could just leave their pet behind.

In some cases though, it can’t be helped.

Shelters or vets can care for pets temporarily, and sometimes a new family is willing to take them in for adoption.

But Nicole Baker, a woman from Pennsylvania, decided her dog didn’t fit into the new Texan life she had planned with her boyfriend. So she left the animal in the trash.

Back in 2015, Nicole Baker put Mia in a trash bag, together with the rest of her trash, and tied it shut. Without any second thoughts, she then threw the bag in the trash can and left. It was clear she wanted Mia to have a slow and certain death.

Baker’s friends had repeatedly offered to take Mia in when she left, but she reassured them that they did not have to bother. Baker’s friends assumed she already had made plans for the dog to go to a shelter or maybe to another family.

Instead, however, the woman preferred to let the dog die of starvation or suffocation — whatever would come first in the garbage can she chose as Mia’s last home.

Mia was lucky when Nathan Binne, a man working with the local sanitation services, found her after she had been abandoned.

“It was shocking,” he told the local news, “to see an animal like that, and I just wanna make sure everything’s okay.”

After the dog was rescued, The Humane Society of Westmoreland County was called, and they took Mia. They also made sure the local authorities were informed so that her former owner could be located.

Mia was treated with love and affection by the shelter staff, and she gradually gained weight and restored her faith in humanity.

After a complete recovery, Mia was adopted by Megan, a vet tech with the humane society. The dog was also given a new name – Fawna – to accompany her in her new life. Together, they started leaving the trauma of the past behind.

The old owner was eventually tracked down and taken to court. There, Baker pleaded guilty to her actions.

As a result, Baker had to pay a $620 fine, enter the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program, undergo a mental health evaluation, and complete community service hours. She will also not be allowed to adopt a dog in Pennsylvania ever again.

Mia’s story is heartbreaking, but Fawna’s rescue is inspiring. Thanks to the people who cared for her and helped her gain a new life.
