Call it what you want, tombstone, headstone, or gravestone, but what you leave on it can be very important. Usually, this is an epitaph with a few choice words for the world you left behind but in some cases, it can be much more. In one woman’s case, it was her signature fudge recipe.

Leaving her recipe for future generations

Located in Logan, Utah, the gravestone of Kathryn “Kay” Andrews and her husband Wade sports the fudge recipe that Kay was known for in life. Now, even in death, she has made sure that her recipe will live on for generations.

A message on her gravestone

It all started in 2000 after Wade died. Kay knew she would more than likely be following him into the afterlife soon, so she made a decision. When she died, her favorite fudge recipe would be forever engraved onto her and Wade’s gravestone. In this way, her family and friends would always have access to it.

How to make ‘Kay’s Fudge’

For the recipe, bakers will need two squares of chocolate and two tablespoons of butter. Once the butter has been melted on low heat, add in a cup of milk and bring it to a boil. Next, add three cups of sugar to the milk and butter, as well as one teaspoon of vanilla and a pinch of salt.

For the chocolate, cook it to a softball stage, or just when it starts to become pliable. Place the soft, cooked chocolate onto a marble slab. Finally, do as the gravestone says and “cool, beat, and eat” the fudge.

Basically, this means to allow the fudge to cool and beat the fudge with a wooden spoon in with the other ingredients until it loses some of its glossiness. Then it is just a matter of cutting the fudge into bite-size pieces and enjoy.

Love at first sight

As for Kay and Wade, it was love at first sight when they first met in New York City. Kay was studying fashion and design while Wade served in the air force on a bomber. He was about to return to Europe during World War II. The two ended up going to dinner together before he left and they never forgot one another.

After the war, the two were married

During their time apart, Kay and Wade exchanged hundreds of letters. Wade loved Kay so much that he named the bomber he was assigned to the “Salt Lake Kate” after the woman he loved. Eventually, he returned from his tour and the two were married.

The couple’s gravestone reflects milestones from Wade’s life. And while Kay and Wade are now gone, their legacy will live on in their five children and the recipe Kay left behind on her gravestone.
