Distressed woman asks if she can sit with skaters after man follows her 40 minutes from store

A lot of women fear walking alone. They’re afraid that something bad will happen to them if they brave the streets without a friend or family member walking with them. It’s a sad and scary fact.

A woman from Vancouver experienced how unsafe it is to walk alone.

Jamie Coutts was on her way home after grocery shopping. It wasn’t dark, so there was no reason to fear walking alone.

While she was walking, she noticed someone following her.

When she looked back, she saw a man wearing a black hooded jacket just a few feet away from her. Even if she tried to see who it was, she wouldn’t be able to see his face because he was wearing a face mask.

It started to make her feel really uncomfortable.

So she tried to let the man walk past her. To Jamie’s surprise, the man stopped and stared at her.

She started to feel more scared.

With all her courage, she told the man that he was getting too close. Unfortunately, he didn’t listen. He just looked at her so she continued walking.

Jamie even tried to test if the man was following her.

She walked as fast as she could. She even walked around the block a couple of times in a circle.

When she was fully convinced that the man was stalking her, Jamie pulled out her phone and started recording.

The incident lasted about 40 minutes but she was only able to get a 7-minute clip. Even if the recording wasn’t long, it was able to show how scary being stalked can be.

When she reached the park, she saw a group of people.

She asked them:

“Do you mind if I sit with you guy? This guy’s literally been following me in circles for like 40 minutes, and I’m recording it.”

Fortunately, the group said yes. They even stayed with her for about 15 minutes.

A lot of people praised Jamie’s actions.

She recorded the incident and shared it on social media to raise awareness. And right after it was posted, other women reached out to her to say that they’ve experienced the same thing with the same man.

On why she didn’t call the police right away

Even though she obviously did the right thing, there are people who question why she didn’t call the police or dial 911 right away. For Jamie, having a video was important. If she took away the camera, she wasn’t sure if she’d catch him if he tried to do something.

She filed a police report after what happened.

The police took the report seriously and an investigation had been opened right away. After looking closely at the case, a person of interest has been identified.

The 33-year-old man from Vancouver has been charged with one count of assault with a weapon. He was also charged with one count of uttering threats.

The investigation is still ongoing but Jamie has stated that the man the police arrested wasn’t the man who followed her for 40 minutes.

She claims this man is just another predator. This means that the original guy is probably still on the streets, potentially stalking other women.
