Woman finds lost dog after 12 days using old hunter's trick

Our beloved dogs are not just pets, they are family members.

They grow with us and teach us simple to valuable life lessons. They would unhesitatingly share their limited years on Earth with us by giving us unconditional love and unparalleled loyalty.

It goes without saying, dogs are truly man’s best friend.

But, what if your dog goes missing?

Due to their playful behavior, dogs are meant to wander around and explore beyond their boundaries.

Although it’s one distinct character of dogs, this also puts them in an unwanted situation.

A missing dog could oftentimes drive an owner crazy.

Just imagine your own dog going missing, not knowing where it went, if somebody took them, what are they currently doing, or worst if they are still alive.

These are just some of the many effects when a dog runs away from home.

The woman shared her story on Reddit and said that in a heavily wooded area, she found herself feeling hopeless.

On her search for her dog, she ran into a couple of hunters.

According to her post, this happened nine years ago and after exactly 12 days of searching.

“They said they lost the occasional dog on a hunt but always got them back. What they told me has helped many dogs and families be reunited,” the woman wrote on her social media post.

“I’ve given their advice out a few times in the last couple days, so I thought if reddit has any lost dogs out there, this could help,” she added.

Using a dog’s strength to its own advantage.

A dog’s sense of smell is so powerful that they are often used to sniff contraband and improvised explosive devices (IED).

Dogs are also used to locate injured soldiers in warzones, which only proves that their sense of smell is beyond compare.

The same goes with searching for a lost dog, the woman shared that one key to finding them is their sense of smell.

She suggested bringing a piece of clothing where the dog was last seen. If the dog has a favorite toy, that could also lead to finding them.

Trust your missing dog’s sense of smell and leave the rest to them.

These scents have a high tendency of being picked up by your dog since these are scents with which they’re familiar.

Also, don’t forget to protect them even during their absence.

The woman also recommended owners with missing dogs to leave a bowl of water in the location too.

This is more particular to places with limited to no access to safe drinking water.

Remember not to bring food because the scent of a sumptuous meal might attract other animals too, let alone wild predators.

“I was skeptical and doubted my dog would be able to detect an article of clothing if he didn’t hear me calling his name as loud as possible all day for 12 days. But I returned the next day and sure enough found him sitting there!”
