Woman searching to adopt new pet at shelter comes across dog she lost over two years ago

Aisha Nieves lost her dog Kovu more than three years ago. She feared she’d never see him again.

Aisha wanted to find a new pet for her sons so she went on the Lehigh County Humane Society’s (LCHS) website. It was there that she saw a familiar face.

The tan pitbull-rottweiler mix had a small scar above his eye. Kovu had the exact same scar he got as a puppy. She knew it was him.

Kovu was just seven weeks old when he came home with Aisha.

He stayed with her from 2014 until May 2019. The dog escaped through a hole in her gate which was left by a driver who crashed into it.

Aisha came home one night without Kovu’s kisses and cuddles. She was four months pregnant at the time and was very emotional.

She thought the worst. It could have been a kidnapping or that her dog was hurt. The dog who was always there for her was gone and she just couldn’t accept it.

Aisha called Kovu her “baby.”

What she didn’t know was that the local humane society had picked up Kovu. Residents found him in someone’s yard. Kovu spent four months with them where he had treatment for fleas and inflammation.

Aisha desperately searched for her dog but by the time she spoke to the humane society, he was gone from the shelter.

Kovu was adopted in October 2019, but his family was forced to return him to the shelter on June 12 after they were evicted. He was in good health the whole time.

The LCHS named him “Ash,” but Aisha knew that it was her lost dog after seeing him on the adoption page. She called LCHS where they advised her to bring photo proof including an adoption fee after she explained her situation.

The moment Aisha and Kovu locked eyes, all those years apart didn’t seem to matter.

“I automatically go on the floor, like to get down, get ready, because I know he’s going to jump on me,” she said. “As soon as he started coming, he started squealing and screaming and yelling.”

The LCHS posted pictures of their happy reunion on Facebook.

“Upon seeing his long-lost mom, the previously shy and scared Kovu let out the most excited squeal we have ever heard!” the LCHS wrote on the caption.

Aisha says a piece of herself was lost when Kovu went missing. Old photos of her beloved dog would make her cry. But Kovu came back home with her and it’s like they were never even apart.

She’s just so happy that her dog is back.

Kovu celebrated his seventh birthday, and Aisha immediately vowed that they’ll never be separated again.

Dog lovers all over the internet were just glad that Kovu found his way back to his mom. Not everyone is as lucky that’s why the humane society encourages pet owners to microchip their pets.
