72-year-old woman gives birth to baby boy, becomes one of the oldest moms ever
Thousands of women turn to IVF and other fertility treatments every year in the hopes they are blessed with a child. The funny thing, though, is that a good deal of said women are what one might call “past their prime” in terms of child-rearing. Even so, these brave women won’t let convention stop them…or nature either, apparently.
All of this is fine and well, but now that so many older women are finding success with fertility treatments, a question of ethics has been raised.
The case that most recently set off would-be philosophers in parenting is that of 72-year-old Daljinder Kaur, who just became a mother for the first time a few years ago.
Giving live birth at 72 years of age makes Kaur the oldest first-time mom alive. Not alone in the matter, Kaur’s husband, Mohinder Singh Kaur, fathered the child in his 80s.
The elderly couple has always wanted and tried for children. As fate would have it, though, they weren’t ever able to make it happen. At least, that is until sweeping advances in fertility sciences gave them hope again.
Now, the Kaurs’ are the elated parents of a healthy baby boy, and they couldn’t be more grateful.
The happy parents named their child Arman Singh, and have extraordinary plans for raising him, but that’s where the friction lies. Ever since the two brought their baby home, they have been catching a lot of flack for choosing to bring a child into the world so late in life.
Many people are concerned for the child’s overall welfare. They believe that having a child so late in life is “cruel” and “unfair” to the child. Considering that by the time baby Arman turns 18, his mom will be 90 and his dad in his late 90s, many feel that the likelihood of them raising Arman to adulthood is almost nonexistent.
Such questions have left those people wondering how the Kaurs’ got clearance for fertility treatments in the first place.
The couple began petitioning India’s National Fertility and Test Tube Baby Center to receive treatments for a number of years. Finally, when Daljinder reached 60, the clinic agreed that her physical body was healthy enough to bear children.
Daljinder went through two full years of IVF treatments, hoping against hope that they would take.
Clearly, the clinic was right in its health assessment of Daljinder. Not only was she able to conceive and healthily carry the child to full term, but she also had a natural birth. What’s more, Daljinder really surprised the masses when she revealed that her body was still able to produce milk. She was breastfeeding her healthy baby boy.
Though Arman came out healthy, he was underweight by several pounds. He was born at 4 pounds, compared to the average of 7.5. However, an average is just that; an average. Furthermore, there is no resounding proof that his weight was because of his mother’s age, so really, it’s a moot point.
Mohinder has confessed that there are some physical challenges to raising a baby. As he learns to crawl around on his own, they do get tired chasing him around. Then again, point out a single actively involved parent that doesn’t.
As for the naysayers badgering them over the “what if’s” that life may throw their way, Mohinder has an answer for them:
“People say, โwhat will happen to the child once we die?โ But I have full faith in God. God is omnipotent and omnipresent. He will take care of everything,” the happy father proclaims.
In that light, and if historical accounts have anything to do with it, Mohinder is completely right. The man puts his faith in God. The God who opened up Sarah’s womb in the Bible. In case you don’t know the story, she and Abraham, father of the Jews, had been trying to conceive their entire marriage. It wasn’t until their 80’s that and angel appeared telling them they would give birth to a son.
So, when did it happen? In their 90’s! They gave birth to a healthy, strapping young boy named Isaac. Isaac means laughter, and he was so named because when Sarah eavesdropped on the angel and her husband, she laughed at the thought that she and her husband might “have pleasure” so late in life. Then it happened!
If God can do something like that, then who is anyone to tell this couple they shouldn’t have believed and tried for a child of their own?
The truth of the matter is, it doesn’t really matter what anyone else believes. It’s their own faith that saw them conceive a child, and we trust that it’s this same faith that will help them navigate the ups and downs of raising him.
