Woman combines five 20-foot shipping containers to build home of her dreams completely off the grid
Just two hours and a half far from Auckland, New Zealand, is Coromandel, a place where Rosie imagined her future and worked hard for her dream to come true.
In a place that was given a sanctuary status, Rosie bought a 23-acre land, which was perfect for her to build the house of her dreams.
In a land of 1,100 acres, there are only 25 lots, including Rosie’s, which means she still lives within a community, but she has as much space as she needs for herself. She doesn’t have neighbors close by, so she can take as much time as she needs to enjoy her “me-time”.

Rosie has lived in Auckland for years, but when she married her husband, she sold her house and moved in with him- again, in Auckland. This meant that she had the money she needed to invest in a new property.
And when she saw the land that was sold in Coromandel, she just fell in love with it. She knew it was where she wanted to spend the rest of her life.
But, first, she had to design a home to live in.
And that’s where the shipping containers come into play. She used five 20-foot containers, and she had the house of her dreams built out of them. Or, to be more accurate, inside them.
Rosie’s home is called “Ahurewa”, which means “sacred place”, and the woman really stays true to that name because she feels it’s all about “guardianship and looking after the native creatures”.
Indeed, her off-grid living standards do not harm the land on which the house is located- on the contrary, Rosie is doing her best to keep it as eco-friendly as possible.
There are 12 solar panels that provide electricity to the tiny home, two 2,500-liter water tanks, and a vermicomposting toilet, which is connected to two tanks used for the home’s composting system.
When one enters the house, the first thing they see is the mud-room, or the place where they can leave their shoes or dirty stuff. This is also where Rosie keeps the batteries, inverter, and power grid.
The inside of the house itself is amazing, but the view from each and every room is what leaves you speechless.
The kitchen is big and practical, and it is connected to the living room, which has a stunning view of the horizon.
Right next to the living room, there’s a reading corner. Both walls in that corner are covered in shelves that feature books bought over the last two decades, and which are also classified by category.
The bathroom is small but practical. There’s a “future-proof” shower, meaning Rosie has made sure she will have access to it even at a much older age, a toilet, and a sink.
Last but not least, is the one and only bedroom, which has a breathtaking view of the sunrise.
There’s also a patio, where Rosie and her family can sit and enjoy the sunset, occasionally even roasting marshmallows.
