Woman invents specially-crafted coat that turns into a sleeping bag for the homeless
The homeless population continues to grow all over the world. If it’s because of a disability, drug addiction, or just simply out of a job they are still human beings. With the small market of soup kitchens and shelters, the homeless are in dire need of hope.
Every day is a gamble on where is the food going to come from? or where they’re going to sleep at night? Not to mention the bone-chilling winter temperatures and the chance of a very rainy spring.
Homeless ages range from youth to elderly and some even have families of their own living on the streets.
People pass with a blind eye as if they don’t even exist, and that heartlessness doesn’t bring any light into the lives that need it most.
The truth is there is hope for each and every individual and a woman named Veronika Scott made it her mission to bring love into the homeless communities.
Veronika is someone who experienced homelessness first hand while watching her parents struggle with drug addiction and mental illness. While going to school at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan the students were assigned a project to design something specifically for the community. Veronika realized she wanted to focus on the homeless community and came up with a life-changing idea for them.
She designed an insulated coat that was fully waterproof, but that’s not all. This warm coat flips to turn into a sleeping bag!
The innovative idea sparked positivity in the entire community. But it wasn’t until one homeless woman said to Veronika “I don’t need a coat, I need a job!” and another lightbulb flashed into Veronika’s mind. That statement resonated with her to do something even greater for the city of Detroit’s homeless.
Veronika created the non-profit organization Empowerment Plan, which was dedicated to defeating homelessness through jobs and education.
She stretched her dream to an even bigger platform and has an entire team of people behind the Empowerment Plan. Their life-changing team has since then distributed 35,000 coats worldwide at no cost. The organization has hired and trained over 80 homeless people to help make their coats, while the Empowerment Plan also guides them to find housing.
The non-profit also offers its employees classes to help them become more self-sufficient, including preparation for their GED test, and financial education.
The Empowerment Plan also provides support for victims of domestic abuse. The list goes on about what an outstanding organization Empowerment plan truly is.
This remarkable coat idea turned into something much larger. It just goes to show how impactful one person can be. Of course with plenty of help from other supporting people. The Empowerment Plan continues to bloom as they help more people in homeless communities. The homeless have been neglected in so many ways and for Veronika to include them in her community is so uplifting. Veronika Scott is a true inspiration in a world in need of hope.
