This woman has knitted hundreds of blankets for shelter dogs

Animal shelters do great things for their communities and every dog that they take in off of the streets. They are some of the public’s favorite charities to donate to and the easiest, who wouldn’t want to help out needy animals? For those that couldn’t possibly adopt another dog, there are other ways to help. People donate food and supplies, volunteer their time at events or walking the animals, among other things. Volunteering dog lovers are what keep the shelters in business.

People donate time and supplies to these shelters to up the quality of life these pups have before they get adopted, but Maisie Green, an 89 year-old dog lover knits gifts for them. This woman found her calling in helping local dog shelters by knitting blankets and dog sweaters for the doggy residents of Dogs Trust Basildon. Dogs Trust is one of the largest dog welfare charities in the UK and houses over 1,700 dogs in their shelters across the country, according to their website. “I love knitting and I love dogs, so this combines both wonderfully.” she says.

Maisie knits all her gifts by hand and donates the lot of them to the shelter twice a year. According to management at the shelter, she has donated more than 450 blankets and sweaters total to their cause. “Dogs Trust is always happy to receive her thoughtful gifts.” says the rehoming manager at Dogs Trust. “With the chill of the winter months really starting to creep up on us I know our dogs are very pleased to put the items to good use, and love feeling extra cozy.”

According to Maisie, it takes her 3 whole days to make one blanket, and one day to make a coat. No matter the time commitment though, she adores doing a good thing for the animals she loves. “I’m delighted to be helping the four-legged residents at the center in some way.” she says of her hobby. Though this may seem like a lot of work to some people, Maisie is simply multitasking and knitting away while she watches television.

Doing a good thing like Maisie doesn’t take a lot of thought, she simply combined two things that she loves. You also don’t have to be skilled to do a good thing either- other ways to volunteer just require a bit of time and a big heart.
