Woman gives waitress a big tip, then learns the woman had been stealing from her
Being a good tipper is always appreciated and makes a big difference in the lives of the people who serve your table when you dine out.
But this woman had a shocking experience even after leaving a good tip.
Tipping in the USA ranges between 15 and 20% of the total bill. 20% is considered generous.
So Whitney Anderson was particularly surprised to find that her generous tip still ended with her being taken advantage of.
Whitney went to Abuelo’s Mexican restaurant with her husband and three children.
They enjoyed their meal and the service was up to par, so Whitney left a tip just above 20%.
On a $45.50 bill, a $10 tip is 22% – so more than generous! Whitney paid by card, left with her family, and thought nothing of it.
Until she checked her bank account, when she discovered something shocking.
The restaurant had charged $65.50 to her card, instead of the $55.50 that she had written on the receipt. Clearly, someone at the restaurant thought that she wouldn’t notice if they sneakily added an extra $10 to the tip.
But Whitney wouldn’t stand for it. She couldn’t let the waitress get away with stealing from her.
So after work, she went back to the restaurant where she was able to talk to management. To her surprise, he didn’t give it any attention and was unfazed by her complaint.
Eventually, he agreed to refund her only half the amount of the added tip, but advised it would take up to a week.
But the issue wasn’t about the $10, it was about theft, so she wasn’t satisfied with a simple refund.
Whitney had left the customer copy of the receipt on the table when she left, and insisted that the manager show her the merchant copy. That was how she figured out exactly what had happened.
The manager didn’t have the merchant copy, he could only find the customer copy which Whitney had left blank.
Somehow the customer copy had been miraculously filled in… with a $20 tip and terrible forgery of Whitney Anderson’s signature.
It was clear that the waitress took advantage of the situation, and had actually committed fraud. She had threw the merchant copy away and re-wrote the total amount on the customer copy to boost her tip from Whitney.
Rightfully upset, and disappointed in how the restaurant handled the situation, she took to Facebook to share her story.
Whitney’s Facebook friends were shocked and pulled up their bank statements to review what had been charged the last time they visited the local restaurant. Some found they had been stolen from too!
With a fleet of angry customers, and so media attention, the manager finally took a better look into the situation. He found that the waitress had been fired from previous restaurants for the same offence.
Finally, the manager of the restaurant refunded the entire bill and issued a full apology. The untrustworthy waitress was also fired from the restaurant.
Lots of people don’t bother to fill out or take their customer receipts with them. And of course most restaurant workers are honest, but you can never be too careful.
Bringing your receipts home, or at least throwing them out yourself, can you protect you from going through a similar ordeal. And frequently checking your bank activity!
And for restaurant managers: always check a potential employee’s references!
