Many of us dream the ultimate dream: settling down and starting a family. This was exactly what 31-year-old Kelsi Pierce envisioned for herself and her husband Kyle.

Unfortunately, fate had a different set of circumstances lined up for them.

The Minnesota couple’s road to starting a family was a rocky one, punctuated with trials and tribulations. Over the course of three years, the couple struggled desperately to get pregnant, exhausting many options along the way. The couple used all of their savings on everything from surgeries to IVF treatments. During treatment, it was discovered that Kelsi had a low ovarian reserve.

Eventually, Kelsi went through a successful round of IVF. But the bad news persisted.

But the bad news persisted. She was told by doctors that her uterus was too thin to carry a full pregnancy. For the next two years, Kelsi tried everything to thicken the lining of her uterus but to no avail.

“He (the doctor) told me that nothing was working and my body just wasn’t able to [carry a pregnancy],” Kelsi told Good Morning America. “It was a very emotional conversation, of course, but I understood that we’d tried everything possible.”

The options left were extremely limited for the forlorn couple.

It basically left the avenue of adoption open to explore, or there was another option – if it was even an option. Doctors explained to the couple that they could use a gestational carrier to carry their embryo.

The couple wanted nothing more than to choose the second option, but the expensive procedure was nowhere near their exhausted budget.

“We had already poured more than our savings and gone into debt incredibly just for what we had done before, so it wasn’t an option,” said Kelsi. “It was a very depressing time.”

But little to their knowledge, while the couple spent time nursing their broken hearts, there was one person who wanted to turn it all around for them. Who was it exactly? Kelsi’s mother.

Rutherford immediately made an appointment with her doctor, who was able to clear her as a gestational carrier. At 53-years-old, her age may have come as a shock to many – but amazingly, her body was fit for the process.

This passionate mother underwent an embryo transfer on February 7, and was confirmed pregnant just a week later on February 15.

Kelsi found herself reeling with joy at a possibility and opportunity she had never once imagined.

“I woke up and there was a text on my phone and it was a picture of a positive pregnancy test and I just lost it,” she said.

Following this exceptional news, Kelsi stopped seeing her fertility doctors – but then the unthinkable happened.

“I used to take pregnancy tests every month and it was just one of those things where, by habit, I took a pregnancy test,” she said of that day in March. “I glanced down at the test and I was going to throw it away like normal, and that was the first time I saw two lines.”

A doctor was able to confirm – Kelsi was in fact pregnant! A once-in-a-lifetime pregnancy she shared side-by-side with her mother.
