Some people demonize addicts and think that there is no hope for them. Jamee Valet’s story shows why every addict needs support.

Substance addiction is something that almost 21 million people in America live with.

That’s one in seven people. For some, it can feel like there’s no hope and no way to overcome their problems.

And while it’s true that the government could be doing a lot more to help these people, there are ways to overcome addiction.

Jamee Valet’s story shows that there is hope for everyone.

Valet’s association with drugs began when she was a child.

She describes her childhood as being “rough.” Her main ways of escaping from the trauma were drugs, sex and alcohol.

But the situation became worse when Valet turned 15. She found a boyfriend who started giving her a range of pills, such as Vicodin, Morphine, Perocets and more.

This boyfriend taught her to crush these pills and snort them. Before long, she reached the point where she couldn’t live without opiates. In fact, she would go on to call them “my best friend.”

Things escalated even further at the age of 17. One day, she snuck out of high school and became so drug-addled that she couldn’t prevent two men from raping her.

To deal with this experience, she turned to meth and heroin. Straight after the terrible event, she met up with her drug dealer and spent the next four days at his home, taking all the drugs that she could.

“I didn’t know limits. I remember throwing up and doing more and throwing up and doing more.” – Jamee Valet.

Shortly after this happened, not a day went by when Valet was sober. Soon, she had no money whatsoever. So she had to start stealing so that she could get her hands on the drugs.

At 19, she was arrested for the first of many times.

In the jail cell that night, she tried to escape from the life that she had created for herself for the first time.

She attempted to hang herself. Luckily, her cellmate was able to raise the alarm and get the paramedics to save her.

The attempted hanging left Valet in a coma for two days. When she woke up, she vowed never to take drugs again.

But almost as soon as she left the hospital, Valet was back to seeking out drugs.

When Valet turned 19, she was arrested another time. After this, she was on probation. For the first time ever, she was able to resist the urge to take drugs.

But nine months into the probation, she relapsed.

So she found herself in rehab. And while she was there, she encountered something that would change her life permanently for the better. She met her boyfriend, Jake.

When the two had both completed rehab, they moved in with each other. At first, the two were able to help each other and avoid drugs. But then something awful happened. Valet became pregnant but later miscarried. The experience led her back to drugs.

Once more, Valet went into rehab. When she left rehab this time, she had more drive than ever.

With the help of Jake, Valet remained sober long enough to get her GED. She is slowly rebuilding her relationship with her family.

The next step for Valet is to enroll into college. She hopes one day to become an esthetician.
