Rescuing animals is almost always a challenge. Most of the time, rescuers don’t really know the state of the animals they’re going to help until they’ve arrived at the scene.

When two rescue groups were contacted for help in rescuing 14 dogs, they didn’t know what to expect.

The only thing they knew was that 14 dogs were left homeless after their elderly owner passed away unexpectedly.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis and Five Acres Animal Shelter got a call from the elder’s family. They said that they didn’t have the means to provide for the dogs’ basic needs.

When the rescuers saw the dogs, they were heartbroken.

All fourteen dogs never received medical care. They suffered from dental diseases and Demodex mange. The majority of them have visible masses or lumps, too.

Although the dogs were in bad shape, they were nice and sweet.

Transporting them to the shelter was easy.

The rescue groups didn’t have any problem with transportation because they were really patient. It was like the dogs were aware of the good intentions of the people rescuing them.

Once the dogs reached their respective shelters, they were immediately given the care they needed.

The dogs were groomed, examined, and treated. They were showered with lots of love and care, too.

Since the majority of the dogs require an extensive amount of medical care, it’ll take a long time for them to fully recover.

The good news is that they won’t have to go through the process alone.

When their rescuers sent out a plea, a lot of their foster families volunteered to take the senior dogs into their homes. There, the dogs are kept warm, safe, and comfortable.

Once the dogs are healthy enough, they can be put up for adoption.

And that’s probably the most challenging part of the process. Not all people are interested in adopting old dogs, particularly those with health issues.

One good reason is the way they were raised. For example, a dog that has been the only pet of an elderly owner may have a hard time adjusting to life with a very active middle-aged couple with two or more dogs at home. He’ll find it easier to adapt to a home where he’s the only pet.

Old dogs have mobility issues, too. They might need help when it comes to walking, getting inside the car, and climbing the stairs.

Families who are thinking of adopting senior dogs with these issues will need to be creative in finding ways to help them navigate through their homes easier.

Senior dogs deserve a second chance at life.

Believe it or not, there’s a long list of reasons why you should adopt a senior dog.

When you adopt an older dog, you’ll have a good idea of what kind of dog you’re bringing home. The majority of older dogs can be accurately assessed in shelter homes. You’ll know if a dog can behave well with children or if he can tolerate cats.

Most senior dogs are already trained and well-socialized.

You won’t have to go through the exhausting process of housetraining your dog. Plus, senior dogs need less exercise than puppies. A quick swim or a few minutes of playing fetch with their favorite toy can be enough to keep the dogs physically and mentally stimulated.
