Woman rented home for over 20 years and is floored when generous landlord gives her the house

When Jayne Saynor went house hunting 23 years ago near Melbourne in Australia, she felt blessed to find the perfect rental in her local newspaper.

She lived in that cozy two-bedroom home for over two decades, and everything was fine up until the day her landlord passed away.

For renters, it can often be a nerve-wracking experience when ownership of a property changes hands. You never know if you’ll be allowed to stay.

Oftentimes, renters get the boot when the new owners decide to move in.

Thankfully Jayne had nothing to worry about. Instead of getting kicked out, she was surprised to discover that she had actually been put in charge of the estate – for life!

Jayne dutifully doled out $200 in rent every single week to her landlord, John Perrett, from the day she moved in.

She was a good tenet and even improved the property by transforming the empty yard into a beautiful garden.

It was a cozy place, and it was hers in spirit, if not in name.

According to Jayne, her landlord was a friendly and generous man. He used to work as a pharmacist in his younger days, but his true identity was something much grander.

It turns out this kind landlord was quite the philanthropist!

John loved helping others and frequently gave back to the community.

Over the course of his 83 years on this planet, he accumulated millions of dollars in wealth, which he didn’t hesitate to share with those who really needed it.

He even donated $19.6 million to the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s nephrology department, where he underwent a kidney transplant 30 years prior.

Professor Nigel Toussiant from the Royal Melbourne Hospital said, “Words can almost never describe how unselfish and incredibly generous Perrett is.”

After he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, John moved into a nursing home.

However, before his final passing, he spoke to Jayne on the phone and let her know what he planned to do with the home.

She, it turns out, would be the new homeowner.

The news was both shocking, and saddening, given the circumstances behind the generous gift.

“I got a phone call from him one day and he said, ‘I want you to talk to my solicitor, he is here at the moment, and can you give him your full name because I’m leaving you the unit’,” Jayne said.

Jayne, who is still working well into her 70s, never dreamed of becoming a homeowner herself.

And at first, she thought she had misheard what the kindhearted man was telling her.

But John could see how much love and attention she put into the place. The fact that she never once considered moving in over twenty years made it an easy decision for him to make.

The hospital plans to use John’s generous donation to support the hospital’s patients in the years to come. A commemorative plaque honoring his philanthropy is also in the works.

As for Jayne, she’s super thankful for John’s generosity. And even though he’s now gone, she still shows her gratitude towards him every single day. “I thank him still, every day of my life. Just privately, I say, ‘Thanks, John.’”
