Woman rescues injured 'dog' that was hit by a car but finds out it's a wild coyote

Andrea Athie, was driving down a long deserted road in Cuidad Victoria, Mexico, when the car she was following hit an animal then just drove off without stopping to check on it.

So she pulled over to the side of the road check on the injured “homeless dog” who obviously help. The skinny dog was dragging a broken leg so Andrea knew that the dog was hit by the car.

The good Samaritan got out and tried her best to calm the injured animal.

She really thought it was a stray dog based on its appearance.

Athie was unable to lift the animal into her car on her own so she called her friends to ask for help. Two friends thankfully arrived and came to her aid. They managed to get the injured animal into her car.

“Seeing the situation, I stopped and went to help him, without knowing that it was a coyote.” she said.

She quickly took the animal to her car and drove it to the nearest veterinarian clinic for immediate medical attention.

“Today my sister picked up a COYOTE thinking it was a run over dog and took it to the vet,” her brother Alejandro Athie tweeted on September 26.

While Andrea was driving to the vet, the grateful creature decided to cuddle up to Andrea. It was as if he was expressing his gratitude to her. Many doggy kisses later, they arrived at the vet.

Imagine her surprise when the staff told her that it wasn’t a dog. Andrea was stunned when they told her that the sweet and docile dog wasn’t just another regular dog.

The coyote was in terrible shape. It needed immediate medical attention as its health was declining due to many internal injuries caused by the car. The vet quickly reached out to a wildlife rehabilitator.

On September 28, Andrea tweeted, “Coyote Pancho Today begins a 5-day treatment to see if he can recover mobility in his back legs.”

Andrea named the coyote Pancho.

“He doesn’t want to eat or cooperate to try to move after his treatments,” she wrote in Spanish.

Pancho the coyote was actually very friendly. He never attempted to attack her and you can even see him resting his head on her lap.

It was urgent they got the coyote the proper care it needed.

X-rays revealed that Pancho sustained two injuries to his cervicals during the crash.

That left him unable to move his hind legs or empty his bowels.

“Every procedure that was performed on Pancho was through a veterinarian and professionally done,” said Andrea.

“Unfortunately, Pancho could no longer continue fighting with us. Pancho simply did not respond to treatment.”

She continued.

“Everything was done humanly possible. In that last moment, I looked at him and wanted him to have the best possible quality of life and not suffer.”

Unfortunately, try as they might and after exhausting all efforts, the coyote passed away five days later due to his injuries.

Andrea was heartbroken but she learned that reaching out and showing love goes a long way. Her memories with Pancho will remain with her.
