People are sometimes mean towards animals and this is not to be tolerated. In some cases, it is not only adults who mistreat them, but it can also be children who have not been raised to love and respect animals and consider them to be toys or, even worse, a nuisance.

Now, what should be an adult’s reaction to a child mistreating an animal- and, more specifically, their pet?

Some would say kids will always be kids and behave like ones, so there’s no point in scolding them as they will grow up and realize what they once did as kids was not right.

Others will argue that a chat with the child’s parents is necessary so that they get the chance to explain to their child that what they did was unacceptable and work from there towards a better understanding of the world and how they should treat others- humans or not.

Finally, there are those people who won’t tolerate any form of abuse directed to their pets and are ready to make their point by paying them back in the same coin.

Like Shannon did the other day when a neighbor’s kid poured water over her cat.

A few days ago, a “10-year old” child poured water over Shannon’s feline friend for no apparent reason. When she realized what had happened, the woman decided to teach the kid a lesson by pouring a basin of water over him.

“My 10 year old neighbour just threw a cup of water over my cat who was sitting on the fence minding his own business n laughed so I threw a basin of water over him from the window,” she tweeted right after the incident.

The woman added that the child’s dad then went to her door demanding to know why she had treated his son like that. As she explained, he was mad about it, but she didn’t regret her action the least bit.

Shannon’s tweet caused mixed reactions on the platform, from people who supported her and opened the sensitive matter of good parenting, to others who suggested she should have discussed with the kid’s parents instead of attacking the kid himself.

After a lot of online discussions, Shannon returned to clear up some facts.

As she explained, she is friends with the neighbors and the reason why the man was mad at her was that he didn’t know what had happened in the first place. She even suggested that both the kid and his dad were laughing at the incident the day after, so she made it sound like it was not a big deal for them. Finally, she clarified that the boy is not 10 but 13 years old, he just looks older!

Well, whatever the case is, she still got hundreds of thousands of retweets and thousands of likes, so it seems that people found the story particularly interesting and worth sharing.

No matter where each of us stands regarding this story, the bottom line should be that children should be taught they are to respect animals early on so that such incidents are avoided.
