If you don’t, maybe this video will convince you. It’s easy to think that it’s scientifically impossible for chickens to laugh, but recent studies have proven that they give off a sound almost like a cackle.

Many animals laugh as humans do.

One of the most famous examples are dolphins, primates, and rats. Research showed that these animals are also ticklish by nature; thus, they make a laughing sound.

The tickle must come as a surprise to the animal for it to effectively make them laugh.

University of Portsmouth scientist Dr. Marina Davila-Ross said this is all part of positive communication.

“I believe that positive communication is closely linked to the evolution of laughter: by communicating with one another positively, we are interacting more with individuals – and it is likely that this played an important role for communication to develop,” she told BBC.

So, it’s not impossible that chickens can laugh, too.

There’s a chicken breed in Indonesia called the “ayam ketawa” or the laughing chickens. Most of these laughing chickens are revered roosters, especially in the Regency of Sindrap, South Sulawesi.

Only the royal family in Indonesia owns these chickens.

Recently, however, people started owning ayam ketawas as pets.

These chickens became so popular that there is a contest for them.

Hundreds of chickens in Indonesia showcase their laughing talent during the said competition, where they are judged based on the beauty of their (laughing) sound.

You can also find laughing chickens in other parts of the world – like in Texas!

A few were skeptical about a laughing chicken, but she assured them that Frances wasn’t hurt or in pain and was just her reaction to the tickle.

Her laugh may not sound like the ayam ketawa, but you can tell she is laughing.

Lisa did it again and couldn’t help but laugh at her chicken’s antics.
