For many people, the life of the Amish is a curiosity. There is clearly a difference between the Amish way of living and that of the modern society, and the opportunity to learn about a culture other than your own can prove fascinating.

There are a few basic facts many of us know about the Amish already. They don’t use electricity and tend to enjoy living in larger families.

With no traditional light sources, the Amish will often use lamps instead of the electric lamps and light bulbs that we’re accustomed to.

Living a lifestyle so distanced from modern society means that the Amish are very resourceful, and many of them are skilled craftsmen, especially when it comes to woodworking. It’s standard for the Amish to make their own furniture, which allows for a real uniqueness from one item to the next. Without electricity, they use generators whenever they need them.

The Amish don’t use cars, so they get around using horse buggies. This form of transport may seem pretty old fashioned, and it can certainly be a challenge in certain weather conditions, but there’s no denying it sounds fun! Their horse buggies generally don’t have lights on them, so to stay safe, they use reflector on the back of the cart, which gives them visibility at night.

The Amish tend to be quite reserved, which is why this video of a brief tour of an Amish home was so valuable in teaching us more about their way of life. There isn’t too much to see, but the woman who records it shows where and how Amish store their food, an Amish home’s bedrooms, a dining area, and a basement/kitchen area.

The furnishings in the home are fairly simplistic, and, of course, there’s no electricity. We can see from the video that this house uses gas lamps instead.

One thing that’s particularly interesting to note is the size of the homes, and how many of them there are. The main house we see is pretty huge. Aside from that, there’s another house that’s simply known as “Grandpa’s House”

We’re also impressed by amount of land on the property. We’d imagine the houses are sitting on a few acres. This does make sense, as the property is home to a larger community, but it’s an impressive sight either way.

It’s the small features of the home that we enjoy the most, such as the four rocking chairs and a bench that sit on the front porch, handmade by the property’s inhabitants.

It’s interesting to see how the basement – which is as big as some people’s homes – has been used. Along one wall, cabinets and cupboards are set up for storage. We can also see a kitchen setup, with an oven, dining tables and chairs, and a sizable sink.

Opposite the storage cabinets is a wall lined with canned items. Now this is an impressive storage setup! There are cans of everything you could think of – potatoes, blackberry jam, vegetables, apple pie filling… a tinned product for every occasion.

The video moves us on into another room, in which a large, quilt-covered table takes pride of place. While the woman doesn’t explain what this is for, we’d assume it’s where crafting, such as quilting, takes place.

The bedrooms are the most simplistic rooms of the lot. They feature a single bed, along with a nightstand, a lamp, a coat hanger, and a window.

We’re tempted to take inspiration from the Amish way of living – simplistic, clutter-free and much more laid-back. That’s a lifestyle we can get behind.
