Woman buys old bus and spends 3 years transforming into farmhouse-chic home

Not all people are comfortable with the idea of downsizing and that doesn’t come as a surprise. Downsizing means having fewer belongings, space restrictions, and lifestyle changes.

A 30-year-old New York Native didn’t mind all the disadvantages of downsizing.

For Jessie Lipskin, it was a way to solve her housing issue. It was also a way for her to live a more sustainable life with a vegan diet.

She started doing her research.

And in the process, she found a lot of options. One of them was a 1966 GMC Commuter Greyhound bus which she found on eBay.

She fell in love with it and purchased it right away. She insured and registered the vehicle as an RV and began its jaw-dropping transformation.

The process wasn’t easy, but she had a lot of fun.

At first, Jessie removed all the bus’ seats. She found a way to make money from them by selling the seats to a restaurant.

After taking them out, Jessie was able to visualize the entire space she’ll be working on.

“When I walk in, it feels huge. It feels even bigger than my New York City apartment,” -Jessie said.

She did most of the work by herself.

However, since she didn’t have any experience with carpentry, electrical, and plumbing that are needed for the project, she got help from other people.

Jessie took 3 years to complete the project.

“The big challenge was that it was very different from working on a home that’s fixed in one location. I constantly had to account for movement, on top of that the angles of the bus and slanted style windows made it challenging to design the best possible layout and curved woodworking. Levels were useless as the bus incline changes depending on location, it was all about calculating angles. This added a lot of time onto the project.” – she shared.

All her hard work was worth it.

Jessie got herself a really spacious kitchen. It has tons of cabinets for storing all her pots and food. Her bathroom is very pretty, too. It has mahogany wood slotted flooring and decent storage space.

There’s an oil painting that adorns the hallway. She also had a custom-made bench cushion to complete the look.

Along the back of the bedroom, Jessie had a little library. Positioned next to the window, it’s definitely the best spot for reading books. There’s sunlight and a really nice view.

Unfortunately, Jessie had a hard time navigating such a huge vehicle.

She only got her driving license just before she bought the bus. Her driving skill wasn’t that great, considering that the vehicle was a big and heavy one.

“I can’t drive it myself! I grew up in New York City and I finally learned how to drive in my mid-twenties. Unfortunately, I have yet to learn how to drive a stick shift! I have made lots of friends with the ability to drive a manual 40-foot bus without power steering!” -she said.

Downsizing isn’t always a bad thing.

Although it requires changes in your lifestyle, it’s a doable process. It allows you to increase your cash flow, enjoy lower utility bills, and have more time for yourself and your family. It can also minimize your stress since you have to deal with less responsibility and less workload.
