Woman gets last laugh turning garage on tiny plot into beautiful 3-story home

Say hello to Marta Nowicka.

In 2018 Nowicka, an interior architect with exceptional creativity and imagination, acquired an old garage located in Dalston, London.

Dalston is known for its vintage fashion stores, trendy cocktail bars, and underground clubs.

Instead of simply renovating it into another garage, she transformed it into a stunning three-story house.

It’s not only beautifully designed but also serves as a comfortable home.

The plot of property is tiny.

We mean ultra-tiny. Despite the challenge of working with a small 45-square-meter property, Marta was unfazed.

As an expert in creating unconventional and innovative designs from empty spaces, she tackled the project with ease.

She was so confident she bought it sight unseen.

In fact, Marta purchased the old garage online without even conducting a personal inspection.

That shows her confidence in her ability to transform a space on her own.

She then drafted an architectural plan with the main objective of maximizing the limited area.

The woman knows her stuff.

Marta’s design proposal was a perfect blend of luxury, while still maintaining a modern feel.

While incorporating essential elements, she also ensured that the space fulfilled all the needs of a person living in the current millennia.

To give a unique identity to her project, Nowicka combined the words “garage” and “house” and renamed it.

Welcome to “The Gouse.”

Despite her desire to create a stylish, modern interior, the renowned architect prioritized preserving the old “texture” of the garage, which was clad in cedar shingles.

She wanted the house to blend seamlessly into the neighborhood, which consisted mostly of Victorian-styled houses.

To achieve this, they began by replacing the old wooden garage door with one that appears unnoticeable.

Marta’s team converted it into a brick wall and installed a secret brick door that’s difficult to spot at first glance.

Due to the limited lot area, Marta decided to transform the old garage into a three-story house, rather than expand horizontally.

To do this, she dug down.

To maintain the traditional two-story appearance, she dug down the ground floor, creating a partial basement with just enough space for a window above ground level to allow natural light to enter.

This unique and innovative design by Marta Nowicka is what she calls “The Gouse.”

Glass floors give it an illusory feel.

The extraordinary design of “The Gouse” features transparent glass floor sections that act as portals, providing a view of every level in the house.

These glass floor sections also serve as additional light sources for each level.

Also, the house boasts a “living wall,” which creates an indoor-outdoor ambiance, making it a perfect retreat for nature lovers who want to stay at home.

The overall atmosphere of the transformed garage is truly remarkable and has undoubtedly made an incredible transformation.

Marta incorporated floor-to-ceiling windows into the design to provide ample natural light during the daytime.

These windows offer a stunning view of the old garden on the courtyard side.

In addition, the exceptional design of “The Gouse” extends to the bathrooms as well.

The bathroom on the third floor features a glass ceiling that provides a captivating view of the sky during the day and the stars at night.

It is safe to say Marta and her team successfully transformed the old garage into 126 square meters of living space in just a few months.
