Woman moves to the wilderness and builds a gorgeous log cabin by hand for only $5,000

A lot of us, at one point in our lives, fantasized about living in the woods.

The urge to run away from the urban pressure and the noise only heightened when remote work took off during and after the pandemic.

However, a lot of people canā€™t make this big move because of financial constraints, which is totally understandable. Natalie Bogwalker successfully achieved this, however, with grit, skill, and about $5,000 in her pocket.

Settled in the middle of the North Carolina wilderness is Natalieā€™s log cabin.

The 700-square feet cabin is home to a family of three but it didnā€™t start this way. The house started with a vision. Natalie wanted to be closer to nature where living can be instinctive and respectful.

She created a 400-square-foot log cabin using reclaimed materials and logs that were found in the forest. But when her partner came into the picture, she knew she needed to do some renovations.

The kitchen is the first thing youā€™ll see once you enter the house.

Natalie shared that of all the rooms in their home, this was the place she spends most of her time in. The gorgeously rustic kitchen features handcrafted cupboards and a sink made of soapstone.

To cut the costs of construction, most of the most was made by Natalie herself together with her friends. The soapstone sink, for example, was born from her skills.

If youā€™re worried about the weather, Natalie got it covered.

She has a large wood stove in the kitchen that has an amazing firebox. The wood stove serves as an oven, a cooking surface, and a heating system not just for the house but for water as well.

Water from their storage flows down through copper pipes that curl into coils inside the stove. Then, the heated water would flow upwards, allowing cooler water to fill the coils in a constant cycle.

When her child was born, Natalie expanded the home by converting her covered porch into a room. She envisioned the room to be a ā€œsmall magical worldā€ which they masterfully executed.

Her daughter has her own small door and a jumping deck straight onto the bed. The deck was made by Natalieā€™s partner and itā€™s a great interior ā€œtree houseā€.

Natalie admitted she isnā€™t a fan of putting a bathtub and a toilet in one room.

The toilet is situated outside the house while the bathtub has its own room where one can lounge while in the water.

Another unique feature of the house is an outdoor bedroom. Yes, you read that right. Their covered terrace is home to an office and a large bed where one can sleep while listening to the calming sounds of nature.

Natalie wanted to share this kind of lifestyle with others as well.

To realize her vision of a self-sustaining lifestyle, she established the Wild Abundance. Her home is the central campus of the organization where they teach life skills such as construction, woodworking, and agriculture.

Natalie shared that with the amount of inspiration and work she put into her house, she wanted to stay there for as long as she possibly can. And with the beauty of nature surrounding her, itā€™s not hard to understand why.
