Woman's decision to put her boyfriend's dog down without permission sparks controversy

How would you feel if someone puts your dog down without your permission?

A Reddit user posted this specific concern in the hopes of finding understanding. The said Reddit user put down her partner’s dog without telling him.

But before you grab your pitchfork, you need to know her reasons first.

“I loved this dog beyond words.”

That’s how she began her post. The post was published under a subreddit where people deliberate and decided whether or not you acted – to put it simply – like absolute trash to another person.

In the post, she explained that her boyfriend had a dog which was already 16 years old at that time. To give better context, she also shared how much the dog meant to her.

“I loved this dog beyond words, let me make that absolutely clear.” She said in the post, “This dog was an absolute gift to the world and I loved them unconditionally.”

Then, she shared her reason for why she did what she did.

She explained in her post that the dog wasn’t getting any younger and with that, the dog was already suffering a myriad of health conditions.

“They were 16, though and had countless medical problems,” she said. Some examples she gave were rotated front legs that prevented the dog from getting up, jumping, or walking.

She also shared that the dog was screaming in pain every time they tried to get up, and as much as they wanted to help, the veterinarians said that there was nothing they could do.

The dog was just in a constant state of agony.

The idea of putting the dog down wasn’t just a decision she made, however. She shared that the dog’s veterinarians advised it too.

She then thought about her decision for a week. Will she let the dog live out the last months or years of its life in pain in agony, or will she show what she believed as the last act of compassion for the dog?

In the end, she decided to give the dog a painless end.

“I thought about it for a week and decided that I had to.” She said in the post, “This dog was suffering so much. The quality of life just wasn’t there.”

When her boyfriend went out one Friday with some of his friends, the girl called him to let him know what she was about to do.

“I was sick of watching my boyfriend dismiss the pain this dog was obviously in; he ignored vets telling him to get this dog put down because it was borderline abuse keeping him alive.” She added.

She put the dog down at home with her partner’s family.

And even if she acted with good intentions, it was clear that she has also stepped on some boundaries most especially when she robbed her partner of the chance to say goodbye.

“I wish my boyfriend was there to say goodbye to his best friend, but he wouldn’t let me go through with it. He rushed home, saw his dead dog and packed up all my stuff. I’ve been living with my Dad for the last few days.” she ended.

So what do you think? Were her actions justified or was she wrong?

Reactions were torn.

“It wasn’t your place to make that decision. If a vet wouldn’t confiscate a dog and put them down, what makes you believe you have the authority to do it?” said one user.

“Your boyfriend should have done the right thing himself. Since he couldn’t, you had to. The dog shouldn’t have to suffer. But I do understand that’s he’s angry.” Said another.
